Until few years ago, Ferrari 250 GTEs — the E stands for Europa — faced a bleak fate: most were dismantled to supply parts for the more valuable SWBs or their chassis were used, with some modifications, to create 250 California or 250 GTO lookalikes. Luckily, in recent years, we have seen the value of good 250 GTEs increasing, and as a result the situation has changed, with 250 GTEs becoming increasingly sought after by collectors.
This particular car is one of the 356 making up the second series, and it is a wonderful original example in a stunning and ultra rare color combination.
It wasmanufacturedin 1962 at Ferrari SpA, Maranello as a US-model and then delivered to US importer Luigi Chinetti Motors. In 1987 it found its way back to Europe were the car only had 2 owners in the last 30 years. The last owner participated in numerous events in Europe with thismagnificentAzzuro metalliccoloured 250 GTE.
This car still has it's matching numbers engine, gearbox and rear axle. Not only the engine number, but also the "numerointerno" has been checked to make sure it is the original engine.Ferrari specialist Tony Willis from "The MaranelloConcessionairesArchive" provided us with the proper information.
The car wasdeliverednew in this very rare but excellent Pininfarina "Azzuro". The leather interior also matches the beige original colour.
It has the original 4 speed gearbox with overdrive and has been with the same owner for the last 20 years. The interior was restored in the past by a brand specialist in Modena, while the brakes and suspension had a complete overhaul a couple of years ago. Toensurea pleasant drive, the Borrani wire wheels have recently been fitted with 4 new Michelin XWX tyres. This well maintained 250 GTE handles and drives excellent. It's engine starts a the first turn and runs very strong.
There is some aging of the paint visible on some spots on the car. Many love this patina, some others don't but still have the option of repainting the car to make it perfect.
Although as many as 955 GTEs were built over the three series, not many survive today.
