The gentleman that owned this car bought it brand new on the 25th of May 1970. He picked it up directly from Fiat in Turin and it was the first new car he ever bought. If you look at the extra pictures in the link above you'll see it in his garage, and you can actually see another car he still has: a 1950's Fiat Topolino, which was the first car he bought, ever (although that one was not new). That is the kind of man that owned this car: someone that cherished it for close to 50 years. Not only that, he was a Fiat mechanic!
The car was in gentle use until the early 2000's when it was decided to give it a full restoration. It was carried out by Emporio Bigatti in Asti (they are specialized in 500s and have an online presence, look them up), except for the motor and transmission that were both overhauled by the man himself.
The car was finished about 10 years ago, and unfortunately it's owner's health took a turn for the worst to the point that he could not complete it, and so it sat, where I found it, for 10 years. She was sitting in a heated garage under 2 sets of blankets and had not been moved in a decade. After much bargaining I was able to buy it from him, and that process merits a chapter on it's own (I'll tell the new owner the full story, suffice to say that the manufacturing of Nutella is involved...).
I took it straight to my mechanic that restores 500's for a full service and overhaul. Unsurprisingly it needed very little, mostly fuel lines, the carb cleaned and reset, brake lines, and other minor things on top of a general once-over. I also took the liberty of installing white wall inserts and a luggage rack that are technically not original, but look very good (and are completely reversible modifications).
The paint is 10 years old but having had no exposure to sunlight nor any mileage on it looks stunning. Also thanks to being single stage paint, the pastel color really pops and having no clear-coat that can dull out, means it's the kind of paint that you can buff and wax as much as you want. The seat covers and door panels are incredibly original to the car, the carpet is new (but the original tan one is available) and all the brightworkand chrome is also original to the car. All glass except the rear driver's side "triangle" is also original. It's a true gem of a car in this condition and with this kind of history/documentation.
The car is not only in gorgeous shape, but it also has all the things you'd want to find with a one owner car: the original Italian licence plates, the original "libretto" (a title that follows the car from day one, and lists it's tech specs and any owner it might have had, any inspection it went through and the taxes it paid), the "foglio complementare" that was a sort of bill of sale that proved ownership, the original owner's and user's manual in the original Fiat pouch and also a beautiful leather key holster that carries the distinctive "Centro Vendita Diretto" keychain from Fiat, that one got when buying a car directly from the factory.
It's a true little marvel of engineering allowing a big guy like me (6'4'' and 230 pounds) to fit in it with ease and putt around with a big smile on my face. Make no mistake: this is a show stopper and wherever you may park it, being it the grocery store or a big car meet, this will be the car that EVERYONE stops and looks at.
There is plenty more to relate, and it's hard to describe how this machine makes you feel behind it's wheel, and I think I can't do a better job than your own personal research, but here is a great presentation done by Top Gear arguing it is the best car in the world for what it meant for the industry: Top Gear video of the 500 history
Look at my feedback and buy with confidence. And to be clear the car is in the US and will be sold with a clear Virginia Title. It is very possible to come see it in person (I encourage it if anything) or to send an appraiser.
Feel free to message me with any questions, I can provide my phone number too. I know your time is valuable and so is mine, let's be respectful of each other.
