I have owned this car since 2009 and I am the second registered owner. The car originally came from Roosevelt Motors.The 1972 Fiat 124 Sport Spider was a revolution in 1972. It has a 5-speed transmission, 4 wheel disc brakes, electric fan cooling, semi-hemi engine, with square bore for high RPM’s.The Aurelio Lampredi style engine with rubber timing belt was an early Ferrari design.
This invention has been used by virtually every motor designer from AMG Mercedes to Honda cars. Carlo Abarth was famous for taking the diminutive Fiat 500, and creating a “Giant Killer” rally machine.
At some point in the Seventies, this technology worked itself up to the Fiat Sport Spider 1608 cc version. This was considered the best engine combination for the model.It came 2 ways: twin IDF 40 Weber carburetor and these can be purchased separately with turtleback aircleaner, or a single two-barrel downdraft Weber.
This car has both setups. It is currently running a single 2-barrel Weber downdraft on an Abarth single plane ported and polished manifold. It has a Faza Abarth (www.fazaabarth.info/FAZA1.html) header that is on the car currently.It also has an Abarth exhaust header that comes with the car but it is tired and less well-made.
This all connects to an NOS Abarth exhaust from the header to the tail pipe. The car: - Has an Abarth stearing wheel - Appears to have a short shifter - Campanello Electron 13 inch wheels - Has new 205 x 13” tires all around - Has an entirely new front end rack, brakes, starter, tie-rod ends, radiator, brake lines - Comes with an second brand new Abarth steering wheel with an extra hub - Has a new Hartz cloth top on it since 2010.
This car is a fierce little rally car that loves to rev. My understanding was that the car was not used by the previous old dentist as a rally vehicle. He had a bad hip and could not drive a shift car for long periods.It sat in his garage, he started it twice a week, and it was kept up by him and his caregivers.
On his passing it came to me, via the neighbor friend/agent seller. I have all books, records, manuals and some extra NOS parts.
It was a Ziebart car in the 1970s. Zero rust. The car has lived in garages since 1972, it has never lived outside.
