1965 Mustang A Code Convertible
1965 Ford Mustang Convertible Description
1965 Mustang Convertible. I had a Mustang friend decode the VIN. It was built on September 23, 1964, came with a 289 4v V8 and a C4 automatic trans, and had a rear axle ratio of 3.00:1. Also it was originally painted in Prairie Bronze with a std black interior. It is now white and has a 2 barrel 289. There is a tag on the engine which indicates it is a 1966 engine. I don't know the history and how that 66 engine got in there but it looks like it's been in there for a long time. Maybe it was a warranty replacement or dealer swap or theft. Who knows. Bot the car is all there and looks like it's supposed to look.
The good:
It is originally a 4 barrel car.
The interior is very good
The floors look and feel solid.
The car starts, runs and drives.
Good 15 footer and with minimal care could be taking you to cruise nights.
The bad:
It is an old restoration and not so great. Although there is some covered up rust this car was not a rust bucket. There are a lot of small chips and scuffs that you can't see from 15 feet but up close you can see it. There are the typical rust spots on the bottom of the front fenders behind the front wheels that have been patched and also the rear lower quarters have been patched. But considering that those areas rusted by the time the car was a few years old it is not bad. It looks like the fenders and quarters are original. You can see looking in the trunk and under the rear wheel well that there is some rust through still showing. I put a couple of pictures to show.
The 4 barrel engine was replaced at some point. That is a shame but it was a 4 barrel car so if someone wanted to get an original replacement that would be appropriate. The engine that is in there doesn't seem to run as well as it should. It has new points, plugs, wired, etc. Maybe a good mechanic could get it running smooth but I think it needs to be gone through. But it will run and drive. The car sat for a long time up until recently also so maybe putting some miles on it would be good.
The tires are old and dry rotted. I wouldn't drive anywhere but around the neighborhood on those tires. The top is tired. Still there and usable but has a few pinholes showing and rear plastic is clouded. It is a power top.
I'm going to stop there. I'm sure if you're looking at this you know what questions to ask. I'll do my best to answer. I'll be as honest as possible. This car needs work but has a good foundation. And we will sell the car for fair price as determined by the interest we get.
The car is actually my brothers car and it is located in Edison New Jersey. He's not too tech savvy and doesn't have an eBay account. I was out there with the car about a month ago and I have a good feel for it so I should be able to answer the questions.
Thank you.
