1975 Ford F-250 Ranger XLT Description

Major Components: The truck has a D60 in the rear and a D44HD in the front (although the door tag and build sheet say it has a D60 up front but it just isn't so.)

Engine. It has a 360 engine that's been stroked to give it about 428 ci (I have no evidence that it has a 428 crank), and it goes anywhere in four-wheel drive. Engine was professionally rebuilt about five years ago by Bruce at Monkey Wrench. The stroke can be verified by sticking a dowel down the no 1 spark plug and setting the flywheel at TDC, which I've done.

More About the Engine. The previous owner told me that the truck had a 428 engine. Typically that means a 3.98 stroke and 428 crank, with about 0.060 bore over.

I am pretty sure this truck still has the original 360 engine block. It would be difficult to bore it over enough to make it a 428 through the same methods used for converting a 390 engine.

However, I have checked the stroke and it measures 4.125. IF it still has the same block, it could have been bored over just a bit (0.020) to clean it up...which would make it have displacement of about 429. If it wasn't bored over at all (4.05) it would be a 425.

Possibilities are 425, 428, or 429. One other possibility is that it has an even higher displacement, but chances are it's in the range of 428.

Transmission. It originally came with a three-speed manual transmission. This was converted to a C-6 automatic transmission...although the clutch petal and a few other items are still in place if someone wanted to convert it back.

Power Assist. The pump was replaced about four years so it's good. The Bendix power steering assist (a ram assist) components—the steering cylinder and control valve—were replaced this month, due to a leak at both components.

Sun Roof. It has a sun roof that opens, but it doesn't seal completely. I tried putting in new seals but if it sits outside and there a rain, when you move the truck about a half cup of water drops in the cab. Fixes are carry a rag, don't park it outside when it rains/put a tarp over it, get the seals fixed by a place that specializes in sunroofs, or cut out the section and weld in the metal from a junkyard truck.

Fluid Leaks? Nearly every vehicle this age has some fluid leakage. This truck and another 1970 truck I have do, but to the extent that even after a couple years there's still no discernible loss or need to add additional fluid. In the case of this truck it is at the transmission fluid pan.

Other Items:

It has shoulder restraint seatbelts that I properly installed (about five years ago)
New power steering pump
New steering assist cylinder and control valve.

Engine professionally rebuilt.

A cargo light.
Ranger XLT trim package
Rubber bed mat
New dash pad and dash cover (installed about five years ago)
Inspected and registered July 2017
Tires 98% tread (33" BFG All-Terrain)
From Albuquerque and very limited rust...surface and simply a solid truck.

Additional information:

  • Door panels are new (within few years.)
  • Undercarriage is solid--floorpans, bed, etc.
  • All electrical works: license plate light, dash lights, tail lights, everything (although temp gauge was disconnected in favor of an after-market gauge that is more accurate.)
  • Some chipped/flaked paint, but 99% is fine. Not perfect, but there's coverage and it looks fine.
  • Yes, the bed and engine compartment could be cleaned. I simply don't have time.
  • Dual exhaust.
  • Box in bed is about 5 years old.
  • Truck has been owned about 8 years, but it's only been driven about 300 miles total in that time.

Let me know if anyone has questions.

I added a photo of the title. The truck was delivered (noted in the Marti report) in 1975 to Albuquerque...and I bought it from someone in Albuquerque in 2009. I'm certain it spent it's life in a dry climate and when I bought it, came four hours east to the Amarillo area.
