This Acapulco BlueGT-350 has not been offered for sale to the public in almost 50 years! Fortunately we were able to locate the original owner who purchased this Shelby on July 16th 1968 from Jim Aikey Ford of Des Plaines Illinois and he was nice enough to forward us a copy of the original issued title for this GT-350! Even more fascinating, you can see the exact same dealer date stamp used on the title and in the original owners manual identification section. The original owner who was from Chicago sold the car in 1971 to a gentleman in the northwest suburbs and we purchased the car this year from his widow. She mentioned that her husband was a long term Shelby enthusiast who owned a couple of them during the past four decades and all his extra original Shelby parts are included with the sale. Please see the photos and description below for more information.
Finished in its correct Acapulco Blue, the car’s paint and trim are in overall very good condition but there are some minor blemishes visible upon close inspection. The car’s windows are clear and intact and its lights are in overall good order including the correct Lucas FT8 fog lamps and a correct matching pair of 64 thunderbird taillights. This Cobra is equipped Cast aluminum 10 spoke 16″ Shelby Cobra wheels with gold center caps with BFGoodrich g-Force T/A radials, sized 225/50ZR16 in front and 245/50ZR16 in back (also included with original 15″ steel wheels). The fiberglass hood with the Dzus fasteners is solid and straight and the bumpers are in very good condition.
Under the fiberglass hood (one of many ways to tell a Shelby from a regular Ford Mustang) is a supercharged 1985 302 roller high output engine with aluminum racing heads, Cobra aluminum intake and performance JBA headers and matched with a Ford AOD automatic overdrive transmission driving the power to the original 3.50 rear end. The engine is making some serious power with the installed Paradise manufactured original 1965-1968 Shelby GT-350 Paxton supercharger kit (#PP709-0019) with a Holley 650 double pumper. To complement these modifications a mini torque starter, MSD distributor, MSD 6BTM ignition and MSD master HVC coil have been installed. This GT-350 features power steering, power windows, power brakes and air conditioning.
Included with the sale is the original numbers matching J code 302 Shelby engine (#8T193221) that still retains its correct one year only J code heads (#302 4V 8B23), starter (#D2AF-11001GA 3G5B), oil pump (#HM68 95331A), Autolite distributor (#C87F) and the original numbers matching Ford C4 three-speed automatic transmission (C8ZP-7D027-A #8T193221). Also included with an Elite Marti Report, copy of the Illinois original issued title, the original Shelby buck tag, original seat tag, original owners manual with delivery information, original 68 Shelby selling guide, copy of the February 1968 Jim Aikey Shelby Ad and an original 1968 Shelby parts list book. Many extra original Shelby parts are included such as radiator/fan, brake discs and drums, brake booster, original gauge cluster, handles, mirrors, lenses, emblems, heater components, grill, sill plates, rocker plates, flywheel, trim pieces, five original steel wheels and more.
The separate high-beam Lucas headlamps in the grille added more character, while a thin, chrome front bumper sat below a mesh grille with the classic “Shelby G.T.350” logo in place (except for the very early cars). The small hood scoop was there to deliver fresh air to the engine. Shelby also included new, horizontal taillights (sourced from a ’64 Thunderbird in 1968) and an integrated Kamm-type rear spoiler.
Inside, the original high back black knitted (5AA) bucket front seats and the optional folding vestigial rear seat are in great condition especially considering their age. The matching black carpet is in similar shape, as are the headliner, instrument panel, original two-spoke steering wheel, inner door panels, mirror glass, center console and GT-500 wood shifter. The dashboard has the correct wood accents, lending a touch of warmth to the cabin, there are the correct auxiliary oil and temp gauges in the center console but are inoperable and all Shelbys came with an integral roll bar mounted behind the front buckets. Completing the interior is a Retrosound AM/FM stereo and power windows. The front windshield appears to be original and still has tax stickers from the northwest suburbs of Chicago from the 1970’s.
This is a genuine 1968 Shelby GT-350 that has been away from the public for almost 50 years and is still very close on being correct even though currently modified. This would be an excellent candidate for an investment that you could drive and enjoy for a couple of years ripping asphalt with the supercharged 302. After a couple years of fun, take out the modern 302 engine/trans and supercharger, sell it all and use the money to put all the included numbers matching drivetrain back in and store the Shelby away in your collection!
This car is currently located at our facility in St. Louis, Missouri. Current mileage on the odometer shows 97,791 miles and is believed to be actual stated by the family who owned the Shelby for 46 years. It is sold as is, where is, on a clean and clear, mileage exempt Missouri title. GET OUT AND DRIVE!!!
