One of only 4,602 examples made in 1963, this one was made in Ford’s Lorain, Ohio factory on March 28, 1963 and was delivered to the San Jose, California region. The Palmers of Menlo Park, California bought this car Towne Motor Company in Redwood City, California on April 24, 1963. After trading in their 1959 Ford V8 Galaxie Hardtop Coupe, Mr. Palmer and his wife Dorothy took delivery of a brand new to the market 1963½ Corinthian White with red interior Ford Falcon Furtura Convertible that was opted with the performance Sprint V8 package! The original sales invoice and original motor vehicle purchase order from the very day that the Palmers purchased this car is included and is a very interesting piece of history that helps validate the authenticity of this Sprint.
These first-generation Falcon Sprint cars formed the basis for the Mustangs released by Ford a year later. Many (if not most) of the interior, chassis, suspension and drivetrain components were derived from those used on the 1963½ Ford Falcon Sprint and/or Fairlane models. In simplest terms, the 1963½ Falcon Sprint was nearly mechanically identical to the 1964½ Mustang while being aesthetically different.
Dressed in factory correct Corinthian White (code M), the car’s exterior paint and trim are in overall very good condition, though there are a few imperfections visible upon close inspection. The car’s glass panels clear and intact while the lights are clear and haze-free. This Falcon rolls on Cooper whitewall tires, size P185/80R13, at all four corners, surrounding wire wheels.
The car’s bumpers and bodywork are in excellent condition, including the matching white power-folding top. The trunk is lined, has a full-size spare tire with a cover and the cargo area is in excellent order. The original radio is in a box. The engine bay is extremely tidy, right down to the windshield washer fluid bag, and the battery appears fresh.
Under the hood is a 289 CID V-8 block with the original 1963 Challenger 260 CID V-8 heads. Buttoned to this engine is the correct Ford-O-Matic two-speed automatic transmission (code 3) linked to a 3.25:1 (code 4) rear end. Driver convenience features include vintage air-conditioning and power steering.
Inside, the red vinyl (code 85A) front buckets and rear bench seats are in excellent shape, as is the matching carpet. The red, padded metal instrument panel is also in fantastic order. There is even a 6,000-rpm tachometer mounted atop the dash while the red factory three-spoke steering wheel invites the driver to take a seat, close the door and motorvate. The inner door panels and mirror glass are in very good order while the center console and shift lever are in good condition. Rounding out the interior is a Custom Auto Sound AM/FM stereo with cassette player but the wipers are currently inoperable.
In 1963, Ford added even more Falcon models, a four-door Futura and a Deluxe wagon. Futura Convertible and Futura Sports Convertible models were also included in the 1963 range. Later, hardtops, and the new “Sprint” model were introduced. Halfway through the model year, the Fairlane’s 164 hp “Challenger” 260 CID V-8 engine was offered for the first time. The Falcon was climbing in trim level from its budget beginnings, as Ford attempted to wring more profit from the line.
The only time a V-8 option was available in a first-generation Falcon was the 1963½ model and these cars were produced in very limited numbers (Sprint two-door hardtop (bucket seats) 10,479 produced and Sprint convertible (bucket seats) 4,602 produced). These first-generation Falcon Sprint cars were the basis for the 1964½ Mustangs released by Ford one year later. Many (if not most) of the interior, chassis, suspension, and drivetrain components were derived from those used on the 1963½ Ford Falcon Sprint and/or Fairlane models. Competition to this Ford convertible in 1963 included Buick’s Special Convertible, Chevrolet’s Corvair Monza Convertible, Dodge’s Dart GT Convertible, Mercury’s Comet S-22 Convertible, Oldsmobile’s F-85 Cutlass Convertible and Pontiac’s Tempest Convertible.
