1965 Ford Mustang Description

1965 Mustang Convertible Project Car

This 1965 Mustang Convertible is complete, all parts are there. The odometer shows 98,700 miles, buthe original engine was replaced in 1974 with a factory new ¾ block 289 V8 with 4 barrel carburetor. There are approximately 30,000 miles on the new engine.

It has a 4 speed transmission on the floor with a Hurst Shifter (the original the T bar shifter is also included as well as a box of engine parts: distributors, starters, etc. from a 289, a 3 speed plus bell housing for a 289, a rear end, door, unmounted tires, a console, Traction bars.

The car was a daily driver through 1988, put into cold storage until 2008 and has been stored outside under cover since. It was driven several miles from cold storage to where it now sits.

The engine was winterized before I stored the car, but it hasn’t been started in 8years. The clutch was slipping before I put in storage.The brake lines need replacement.

The interior is intact, although dirty, there is good glass all around, and rear window was plastic and needs replacement along with the top which has a few repaired tears in it. The mechanics for the roof appear to be functional, no rust or damage.

The car was never in an accident, never hit or dinged in a parking lot.

Please examine the pictures closely, as I am limited to 12 pictures, I’ve posted the most representative of the car. There are the usual rust spots, the floors and trunk have a few spots, normal for Mustangs of this vintage. The rocker panels appear sound without rust.

Happy to email pictures to interested parties.

The car is located just west of Boston near Watertown, MA

Make no mistake, this is a project car, hence the low starting bid of $500. There is no reserve!

Winning bidder is responsible for transport, payment in full by PayPal within 3 days of auction end.

The driver’s fender has the following stamped F508D165229

Indicating the following:

5 = 1965 year it was built (Ford used 5 for BOTH 1964 1/2 as well as 1965

F = Dearborn, Michigan assembly plant

08 =indicates convertible

D = Engine 289 4V V8

165229 = unit (this was the 65,228 car built)

According to Ford research, each plant started each year with number 100,001

The Falcon, Fairlaine, and Mustang were all numbered together, regardless of model

or type.

The plate on the door: 76A 3 86 12F 11 1 5

The original engine was replaced in 1974 when the odometer reading was approximately 65, 000 with a factory new ¾ block 289 V8 with 4 barrel carburetor. It was professionally installed by the local Ford Dealership. There are approximately 30,000 miles on it.

There two areas in the trunk where rust was removed and sheet metal pieces installed (check pictures).

The driver's rocker panel is good, the passenger rocker panel has a rust through spot about 3/4 from the front.

Included in the sale is a front bumper needs to be rechromed and upper/lower pans as seen in the pictures.

I have added and additional 12 pictures, please check them out; interior cleaned up, trunk emptied, numbers showing (fender and door)

On Nov-27-17 at 17:25:46 PST, seller added the following information:

Upon review of various internet Mustang research sites, this Mustang may actually be a 1964 1/2 based on the codes, if anyone is interested to research the codes and the many Mustang Collectors websites they may come to the same conclusion.
According to Ford, there were atotal of 121,538 Mustangs produced during the 1964½ model run.
Mustangs were built between March 1964 and August 17, 1964, and were identified as 1964½.
This Mustang was built on June 12, 1964, and has the number in the warranty tag hows165229and therefore was the 65,228"Ford" built. (I say this because the production year at each plant started with 100,001, but they built Mustangs, Fairlanes, Galaxys, all at the same time, so, it's possible this Mustang could probably have a lower Mustang production number because of all the other models being built.
(you can easily research the codes and number of Mustangs built from 1964-1965)
