Sporting a look that could only come from an extensive restoration, this 1966 Ford Mustang convertible is the kind of classic that, if you were to see it on the highway, would likely prompt you or any other classic car enthusiast to say, "I really have to have that car." It's got such a clean, well-preserved appearance that this drop top would not only draw attention in the course of its daily travels, but also as a worthy competitor in local car shows.
We see Mustangs clad in variations of red paint pretty often, but the Candy Apple red this '66 carries is a standout, not just because of its tasteful balance - not so bright as to look gaudy and yet not so muted as to be a mundane choice - but because it's also a perfect match for the car itself, no real surprise as it's the same hue this classic rolled off the line with more than 50 years ago. A nice, even application under a very strong clearcoat gives it a liquidy shine that serves as a great backdrop for the fresh looking collection of chrome it's ornamented with, including the bumpers both fore and aft, and the array of trim and badging that all has an appealingly new look to it. When darkening skies warrant overhead protection while on the road, its tan canvas convertible top is not only a welcome change from the almost invariably either white or black counterparts you normally see, but also looks great and seals well to keep the elements out. Its rear window remains impressively clear.
The two-tone interior waiting inside the doors is another nice surprise. It's got a great look and is in unusually clean condition, even for a newly restored classic. It sure doesn't look like this interior has borne the weight of many passengers. The bucket seats up front and bench seat in back feature tan inserts that match the door panels to either side and show almost no perceptible wear. An aftermarket console has been added and it grips firmly to the area between the buckets to provide a pair of cupholders, some welcome storage and a convenient place to rest an elbow while on the road. Just in front of the stock steering wheel, the dash area has been refurbished to original specifications. Its steel surface has been thoroughly prepped before repainting and looks very smooth, carrying a set of easily readable gauges in the instrument cluster, as well as a pair of well-applied woodgrain inserts. Everything is also in good order with the trunk area in back - it's lined with signature Ford fabric, with a full-size spare sitting in place.
This classic drop top features road worthiness that's very much on a par with its exceptional good looks. A 289- cubic inch V8 sits under the hood, running great and giving off just the right note as it exhales into its FlowMaster exhaust. It carries an Edelbrock 4-barrel carb on top for a little extra power and is bolted to a 3-speed automatic C4 transmission that continues to shift with slip-free precision. A pair of additional features - power steering and power brakes with discs in front - makes for easy navigation and low-effort stopping with an added measure of fade-resistance in more demanding conditions. Be sure to take a look underneath and notice the level of detail and the floors covered in factory correct red oxide primer. This very sharp convertible classic sits on a set of 14" Mustang wheels outfitted with BF Goodrich T/A radials.
Looking great both inside and out and running with all the confidence-inspiring smoothness and power you'd want in a frequent driver, this is one very appealing vintage drop top. Call today!
