This vehicle started life out as a hardtop and was professionally converted by a company making these manual retractable top conversions (soft of like Shelby modified factory Ford cars in the early days). They made about 2 or 3 original prototypes for 65 and 66 model years and then the company started producing them in numbers but ran out of money and was forced to shut down. There is an extensive history of these cars online, just google "mustang retractable hardtop" and you'll see several articles and history pages). THIS IS BELIEVED TO BE ONE OF LESS THAN 12 EVER PRODUCED and is EXTREMELY RARE.

I've seen a couple at large auctions like Barrett Jackson and Mecum for anywhere from $40-50k, usually in V8 configurations, (they were manufactured with ANY engine options available for the years). I have NEVER seen one that was a factory 6 cylinder and as far as I know THIS MAY BE THE ONLY ONE THAT SURVIVES!

Car runs and drives fairly well and comes from Florida where it was purchased by acclaimed reality TV star Ted Vernon from the TV show South Beach Classics. I met him in person down there during the "Turkey Run" show near Daytona Beach a few years ago and purchased the car from his collection.

NEWLY DONE (WITHIN THE LAST 5 YEARS): paint/bodywork (driver quality paintjob, not perfect), NEW bumpers, NEW door handles, NEW seat covers, NEW hubcaps, NEWLY detailed engine bay, NEW mirror. TONS of other new parts.

Underside has the usual reinforcements on the frame and torque boxes which signifies this is a REAL car and not a make shift clone. The frame was reinforced to make way for the roof retracting in the trunk. SEE PICTURES

This is a very nice and presentable example of an EXTREMELY RARE car that will only appreciate in value as the years go by. With that being said, it is NOT a restored 100 point show car obviously and it has NEVER been completely restored, just aesthetically refreshed a few years ago. Dash and bottom of doors on the insides have some rust. E-brake needs new cable. Runs and drives well but could use to be tuned properly (i've only driven it a couple of miles at a time). Underside has SOLID floors with FACTORY WELDING to reinforce the chassis for the cut top. Could use carpet and door panels as they are worn. Not working: fog lights (need to be connected), radio, horn, could use a couple of bulbs here and there i'm sure. There are MANY other small issues I can't remember right now with it as you'd expect with a 50+ year old car. Please ASK QUESTIONS and CALL ME to discuss (917) 749-4302
