1974 XLT Automatic
1974 Ford F-100 XLT Description
This 1974 Ford F100 XLT is one sturdy, strong driving truck. With V8 power under the hood, and both its original window sticker and owners manual sitting securely in its glove box to provide some historical context, it's ready to bring some welcome nostalgia to your driving routine, whether that be through dependably transporting you to your work site or handling any hauling chores you might send its way. While there had already been five previous incarnations of F-series trucks, and the sixth generation (of which this '74 is a member) featured approximately the same size wheelbase as its predecessor, you can make a pretty strong argument that Ford rolled out one of its most significant improvements for this class, in the form of its much more extensive use of galvanized steel that's ably helped this pickup to withstand the rigors of duty over the years still very much intact and showing no structural weaknesses. Just trace the prominent lengths of chrome trim running its sides and you'll see that they remain impressively even from front to back - a good sign that this F-100 retains the same rigidity and body alignment it rolled off the line with nearly 45 years ago. Clad in black, you'll see no perforations from encroaching elements, even when you direct your focus down to its rocker panels. Both the front and rear bumpers appear well-aligned and all of its window glass is impressively clear, adding to this truck's continued vitality. While the company's "Built Ford Tough" slogan wouldn't debut until the late '90s, it's pretty easy to see it already had some basis in fact far sooner. The black vinyl interior provides a comfortable, welcoming environment while on the road, with a refurbished and well-padded bench seat that mixes vinyl and cloth. Being a member of the F-100s sixth generation also yields some benefits as far as the interior is concerned, in the form of a substantially roomier cabin and significantly improved ventilation, and upgraded "XLT" model status brings with it a more stylish sensibility. Air conditioning was a seldom seen option during this era, so its presence is a welcome surprise. The burl-patterned dash area still looks impressively straight, with a set of easily readable original gauges residing in the instrument cluster and an AM/FM radio sitting front and center. The bed area in back features more extensive use of double-walled construction than in previous generations, and looks nice and straight, with no visible damage to its floor or wheel wells. Looming just above the bed is a Ford-branded hard top fiberglass cover to conceal its contents that conveniently opens like a cooler to allow access to the space inside. Underneath the hood, a factory-correct 360 cubic inch V8 sits in a very tidy engine bay to power this workhorse. It's paired with a 3-speed automatic transmission and still sounds strong as it exhales into a set of aftermarket headers. Despite the generous bed length and wheelbase that's made it such a sought after work truck over the years, with its featured power steering and power brakes, its agile maneuverability and stopping prowess belies its size. This vintage Ford pickup sits strong and tall on a set of 15" Pace rims outfitted with Eldorado Legend GT tires. This 1974 Ford F-100 offers a rare combination of rugged, classic charm to set it apart, and a trustworthy, strong running condition to make it a valuable companion on the road as soon as you get it home.
