The chance to own a piece of history doesn’t come around that often. This car represents just such an opportunity, and is an exceptional, show-ready street machine in every way. Designed and executed in the late 70’s by the legendary Dick “Magoo” Magugorac as a commissioned build for Mickey Knight, the car was immortalized in pictures by the great Steve Coonan for a full-color cover and 4-page spread in the September 1978 issue of Street Rodder, accompanied by an article about the car written by Pat Ganahl. When the car was selected as the 1978 Street Rodder magazine “Feature of the Year”, they said that “Magoo’s flawless heli-arc welding and an eye for proportion lead to what is bound to become one of the classics in modern rodding." I think that one look at how well the car has held up in condition and styling today certainly proves those words from 41 years ago to be true. The car has been incredibly well-preserved and is 100% ready for a major show or event RIGHT NOW. The original Henry Steel body with rare Jack Hagemann “lunchbox latch” hood is incredibly straight, exceptionally solid, and basically flawless all the way around except for just a handful of minor marks from normal use over the years. As you can see in the photos, nothing that reveals itself to the eye, and mainly things that only the closest examination could even reveal.
Those of you who regularly follow my ads know that I typically take between 100-200 photos of most of my vehicles to make sure you see any flaws or issues with them. I have only taken 50 of this car because it is virtually flawless, and presents as though it were built last year, instead of 41 years ago. If you want a particular photo, just ask me, but know that there are ZERO issues with any part of the car except for the handful of truly minusculemarks from normal use that 95% of people won't ever find. It is the definition of Show Car, and presents that way from all angles. The paint is glossy, slick, shiny, and smooth, and is so vibrant and rich that you would think it was laid on the car last month! It really is just incredibly nice, and shows the level of quality and care put into doing it. The undercarriage, which is a masterpiece of chrome, polished aluminum, and matching paint, still shows like it is ready for the show stage mirrors, and we have not even taken a towel to it to wipe it down prior to these photos!!! It is exceptional from front to back, and highlights everything from the Teflon bushing Super Bell axle with disc brakes resting on Pete & Jake’s 4-bar upfront, to the Koni coil-overs holding the 1957 Ford 9” rear out back. The car went from Mickey Knight to another Street Rod aficionado’s collection, Sidney Allen. While in his foster care, the original steel wheels with trim rings were removed and replaced with the wire wheels you see on the car today. Fortunately (for collectability’s sake) he retained the originals, which are also included with the car. He also elected to have the original interior updated to tan leather in a similar style to the original by Denny Nish by Conejo Auto upholstery in Thousand Oaks, CA, and while they were being redone, all-new Mercedes-Benz carpeting was installed along with a complete Mercedes cloth convertible top and modern shifter. Overall, the interior shows like new, with no signs of damage, ample room for larger folk, and stunning details throughout, such as the signature Magoo Auburn engine-turned dash with S-W classic gauges, A NARDI steering wheel, chrome spoon gas pedal, and functional emergency brake. There are no flaws to speak of, and no sign of any damage, staining, disrepair, rips, tears, or seam pulls. It is ready to present at any show or event you want to take it to. Power comes from the original LT-1 V8 with ported “turbo” heads installed when built by Magoo, and the 2nd owner only upgraded the intake to an Edelbrock polished intake manifold with matching polished 4bbl carb. on top. Finned and painted valve covers look great, and all the accessories, wiring, and incidentals under the hood show exceptionally well. The Turbo 400 was polished as well, and the stunning hardware shows that no detail was missed from design through assembly. From paint to interior, trim to mechanical, this car is in exceptional condition. It has been living with some of its Street Rod brothers and sisters in blissful retirement in a private collection in Naples, FL for the past few years, and spent its time being cleaned and stored in a climate-controlled facility with short jaunts around town to keep the fluids circulating. It starts runs, and performs faultlessly, and has NO issues of any kind to address. It is a must-have for any serious collectors’ inventory, and comes complete with the various show boards, display items, extra wheels and tires, and miscellaneous items that have been passed along from the prior 3 owners. If you are looking for the best of the best in a historical Street Rod, this is the car for you. Additional photos, videos, and private appointments to view the car in person are encouraged and welcome. Please call me directly at 941-286-0889 to arrange.
