Description

Spuds Garage is honored to document and offer this historic example selected as 1 of "The Most Significant 32 Ford Hot Rods" for the 75th Anniversary of the 1932 Ford (1932-2007). During and leading up to this Historic event presented by Ford Motor Company, several prominent hot-rod historians, serious automotive enthusiasts and journalist's joined together to document, proudly revisit & present their part of Hot Rod history, encapsulating these cars forever. With that said, the History of the "Jackman Brothers Deuce Sport Coupe" is best told by those who lived it and wrote about it...

"Jackman Brothers Sport Coupe"

"The Model B-50 Sport Coupe is one of the rarest of 32 Fords. Based on the 5-window coupe, a fixed soft top replaced the rear quarter windows and steel roof structure. only 2,911 were produced and the body style was dropped in 1933. Thus not many became hot rods.

An exceptional exception belonged to Tom and Harry Jackman of El Cajon, California. Their father, Tom Sr., had been involved with cars since the 20's and owned oval track race cars for many years. He got the boys started when they were 10 and 11 years old. After "some old junkers" their father bought them this car for $75. With instructions to "do the job right and stick to it", they tore the car down to the last bolt and reassembled it three times. They felt building the car taught them "patience, thoroughness and the ability to be meticulous," as they wrote on the spec sheet of the show entry. Their work was rewarded when they won the Sweepstakes trophy at the San Diego Custom Car Show in 1959. They were then 16 and 17 years old.

The car appeared in Hot Rod Magazine twice, August of 1959 when it was black, and again in 1962. In its final form everything but the body and engine was chrome plated including the frame. Scalloped and pinstriped clear Plexiglass floorboards showed off the chromed transmission and detailed chassis components. The engine was a 312 c.i. 1957 Thunderbird Y-block with Isky cam and Edelbrock dual quad manifold. Individual chrome headers extended all the way to the rear bumper. Candy Wild Cherry paint and silver tuck and roll contrasted the white padded top and running boards. Chrome wheels and '50 Merc hubcaps were sometimes replaced by polished smoothed Halibrands. Ironically, the Sport Coupe won dozens of awards intended for roadsters."

"When we first spoke with Harry Jackman over a year ago, the whereabouts of the Sport Coupe were unknown, but the significance of Tom, Harry and their friend's hot rodding that Deuce more than 40 years ago was very clear.

In early 2006, Hot Rod Hotline, through its extensive website coverage and contacts, located the body of Harry and Tom's car in Kansas. Pete Mustain had purchased it, now mounted on a different chassis, with plans to build a hot rod. In an unusual but terrific turn of events, Pete's plans have brought the Jackman body full circle - back to a look similar to its first Hot Rod Magazine appearance.

When Harry was unsuccessful in his attempts to buy back the original body, he approached the event organizers to see if we would be willing to exhibit (along with the originally bodied car) a recreation of the 1962 version. With the support of Pete Mustain, the consent of the Selection Panel and about eight months to go, Harry and his friends went to work.

Hot rodding has always been about the experience of creating your dream car. In the case of the Jackman Sport Coupe, the '62 Hot Rod Magazine is Harry's dream car, and the 59 Hot Rod Magazine version is Pete Mustain's. Both men and their circle of friends have made outstanding efforts to have these cars here. The "75" organizers are honored to present this pair of Deuces."
