1988 Ford Mustang GT Convertible
A Foxbody Mustang is a Mustang produced anywhere from 1979 to 1993. It doesn't matter if it's a coupe, convertible, or a hatch. It also doesn't matter what engine it has either, or transmission. As long as it's between the ages of 1979 and 1993, it's a Foxbody. I know, it's a really weird name to give to a car. But it's called a Fox Body because it's on the Ford Fox platform. Ford designed the Fox platform as a unibody chassis and used it across a wide range of Ford/Lincoln/Mercury vehicles. Ford's main objective with the Fox platform was to downsize the massive cars they made in the '70s.
Welcome to 1988, and this consignment in the form of a 1988 Fox Body Mustang convertible. The consigner states that this car is all original, even down to the majority of the paint, but mileage is up in the air as to actual. A few areas of fading, and some normal bumper wear as well as dings that have rusted, and scratches and scrapes, but overall an original survivor.
Exterior
Oxford White covers steel panels that have a few aforementioned faults, but nothing real serious. Below the midline is titanium gray, and this runs around the car creating various coves and flares, as well as some embossed badging on the rockers. Separating the white and gray is a blue stripe, which also surrounds this fox. Above and below this stripe were some trim that has faded, since wearing off and revealing the yellow plastic below. A black convertible top in good condition is above and it has a clear glass rear window. 1991-1993 16-inch pony wheels are all around, and a note to some of the front lighting, it has a few cracks in the plastic protectors. Bringing up the rear is a black luggage rack on the trunk lid.
Interior
All original and all blue and white for the door panels, a blue center console and dash. To salt the blue mix are white buckets in vinyl and leather mixture in front and across the back is a rear bench mimicking the pattern of the front buckets. The dash is blue and original with black inserts and has a Sony aftermarket AM/FM/CD player neatly inserted where the original radio was. Very clean (not unlike the rest of the interior) blue carpet floods the floors and has been well maintained with very little fading. A shout to the trunk which has its original unspoiled felted lining, presenting very nicely.
Drivetrain
Under the hood is an original 5.0 Liter V8 which shows some nice patina but is clean. This is fed by electronic fuel injection and has an AOD 4-speed automatic transmission on back. A Ford 8.8" rear axle with 2.73 gears is noted to push this car along.
Undercarriage
Very slight surface rust is seen but mostly structurally solid unibody construction with clean floor pans and rockers. Some invasive surface rust is noted on the passenger's toe/kick area underneath, just adjacent to the exhaust pipe. Independent coil springs and 4 link with coil spring suspension as well as power disc brakes on front and power drums on the rear are noted.
Drive-Ability
This car fired right up and handled the test track with flying colors. We do note that the top motor was whirring, but no action on the up and down front, so we assume something is amiss with the convertible top. Also, the power rear windows were in-operable. A good handler, and tight car though so a thumbs up goes to it.
Mostly original here folks, complete with its battle scars, and faults, but overall really nicely preserved survivor. And of course, engine power from the 5 liter that is sly as a Fox!
