1988 Mustang GT convertible Hotrod R build street/strip
1988 Ford Mustang Description
This is my own personal build. It is titled in my name. I purchased the car in 1992 with 42k miles. It is factory colors inside and out. Original factory drivetrain with modifications (will list below). Does not overheat. Idles well. Starts well. Goes like HELL. Looks like a museum car...but it's not. This is a Hotrod from the 90s that I personally built to high standards.
If you are looking for a stock Mustang GT convertible you can stop reading and go to the next listing.
This is NOT a car to use on long trips or commute to work every day etc etc. It is a big fun toy.
I built this to drive around locally and be capable of 12 second 1/4 mile runs when at the strip. I had one outing at the drag strip and I was kicked off after one run as it was too fast and had no roll cage.(their rules) It was about that time I discovered autocross and road track racing and the Mustang took a side burner and I bought an Ariel Atom.
The Mustang has always been stored indoors (heated) and kept clean and covered. It gets taken out yearly and maintained properly.
Its a fun, safe and fast car but I just don't go cruising or to shows so it mostly sits.It is now time for someone else to enjoy this cruiser hotrod muscle car. Shake, rattle and roll!
The engine lower end is original with forged pistons. No smoke,no loss of oil. Excellent oil pressure. Excellent compression. The cylinder heads are the original iron heads but built by Powerhouse(Ported, new valves, springs, retainers) to support 500HP. The cam is a hydraulic roller Trick Flow forced induction profile, with FMS 1.7 ratio roller rockers. FelPro green stripe head gaskets,ARP fasteners.TrickFlow Track heat upper/lower intake.EGR delete,BBK throttle body. Vortec V-1 supercharger (straight cut gears, whines) with FMS A9L MAF computer controls and a Vortec FMU and T-Rex fuel pumps.Runs very well on 93 octane. Stock fuel tank and an accurate fuel gauge. The gauges on the custom cowl are functional.Fuel pressure, oil pressure and boost. (mechanical gauges). I do have a "75-100HP" blower upgrade kit that includes a smaller blower pulley, matching blower belt, matching FMU Vortec recalibration kit (4-1), a Ford Cobra MAF meter calibrated for 60lb injectors and eight, 60lb injectors, all new and included with the car. Personally, it's fast enough (no cage)
The transmission is the original AOD built by Lentech to Street Terminator level.(600HP) Precision Industries Stallion torque converter (non lock-up) calibrated for this car. B&M Hammer shifter (ratcheting). It will hold any gear, but it does shift up/down if left in drive. It shifts very firmly. Full synthetic ATF. Superduty transmission cooler. Hurst Line lock on shifter handle. Driveshaft loop. 8.8" FMS 3.73 ratio Powertrax (think Detroit locker; it click, click, clicks around corners) locking differential and Moser 31 spline axles. South Side traction bars,HPM uppers. It's not a factory smooth ride..but also NOT boring. It launches straight and hard.
Tubular QA1 engine/suspension subframe, QA1 control arms and QA1 rebound adjustable coilover dampers at each corner. Strong and light, but not quiet. Subframe connectors welded in,and torque boxes MIG welded. Car weighs about 3k.lbs. Flowmaster American Thunder exhaust system. Not LOUD, but not quiet. Sounds perfect. Does not rattle under the car.Aluminum radiator with a Black Magic fan..car runs less than 200, even on hot days. A/C deleted but compressor/lines/condenser will come with it. (I will not install it) 17" Centerline forged Vortec wheels 17x9.5" rear and 17x8" fronts.Kumho V710 DOT slick rear tires (295/40/17) which do not rub. 245/45/17" BFG touring on front, which do rub in parking lots. Included is another set of the Vortec wheels (same sizes) with the 17x8" wheels shod in BFG touring tires (match the fronts) The stock 15" turbine wheels (4 of them) are also included. The interior has new seats, new carpets, new CD/radio. It's nice and tidy. This car was built before air bags, so no goofy steering wheel bag. The body is straight, and the paint like glass, in the factory original colors.(PPG) The imperfections in photos are illusions. It's really stunning in person. I've gotten LOTS of complements...especially since it is not a "show" car.New roof in factory color and style. Fiberglass Cervini Stormin' Norman hood and fiberglass R code deck lid/R-wing. All other panels, lights etc. are original with VIN on them. Look at the stock moldings carefully..they are not curled or lifting like most fox Mustangs. Look at the body lines and gaps. It has spent most of its life indoors. This car has NEVER been rusty. NEVER. This is not an old rusty horse with a new blanket.I like my machines to look and run good.
I'm just storing it (indoors, covered) at this point in my life, as most of my spare time is spent at Whiskey Hill Raceway doing laps in the Atom or instructing. I may have died and gone to heaven...:)
I built this car for me, so it's done right. It is a real "show and go" turn key car. I have been a professional mechanic for over 45 years and counting.
Any specific questions, ask away. I know everything about the car since I built it. If you want a unique and dependable muscle car then consider mine. If you want a stock fox Mustang you should keep looking.
Sorry, NO trades. I also don't need any help selling it. Available for inspection by appointment in central Ma.
Thanks for looking. Mark
