1968 Ford Torino GT
The car was named after the city of Turin (Torino, in Italian), considered "the Italian Detroit". The Torino was initially an upscale variation of the intermediate sized Ford Fairlane, which Ford produced between 1962 and 1970.
For consignment a Torino from 1968 in GT trim. Plenty of work has been performed on this car with a previous owner engine rebuild. This consigner was not content with that and decided to upgrade the entire car, with the likes of power brakes, new master cylinder and booster, front racing brakes and rotors, new wheel bearings all around and a new differential. It adds more muscle to an already buff version of the luxury muscle car.
Exterior
With straight steel panels bathed in Gold, well minded gaps are seen throughout between these panels. A nice sporty black stripe actually begins in thin, on the rear quarter and runs forward, widening, and making a right angle downward turn on the front quarter near the grille, then runs rearward and thins back out at the beginning of the lower rear quarter. Chrome and brite-work is excellent, all original badging is attached. A few scuffs and scratches for the paint, but mostly in excellent condition. Standard gold drilled steel wheels are on all around with a GT badged cap in the center and a deep trim ring surrounding all wrapped in white raised letter Performance GT Grand Prix radials.
Interior
Wonderful late 1960's gold and black two tone for the seats, door panels and steering column. Black tuck and roll for the inserts and smooth gold bolsters and this interior with the front bucket chairs and the rear bench (couch) are all original and excellent. Some chrome trimmings thrown on the sides just for extra accenting too. Black carpeting floods the floors and allows for a nice background for two tone seats. The door panels get into the act as well with an upper tuck and roll panel at the sills, and a clear gold vinyl panel below, housing the window crank, mirror toggle and armrest/door pull. Upfront a multi circle molded dash houses all the instrumentation. This circle pattern is all padded black vinyl and has the original gauges within these 4 deep set surrounds. Below is a horizontal ribbed bar which holds the radio, and various knobs and pulls. Fronting the dash is a rally style Grant steering wheel. Sitting proudly in the center of the buckets on the hump is a T style B&M shifter. Just a fab presentation with the gold and black seldom seen.
Drivetrain
Under the hood a 302ci V-8 with an added mild camshaft and topped by an Edelbrock 4-barrel carburetor, an HEI distributor and new blue wires and new spark plugs, this engine has been tuned for maximum performance. All backed by a 3-speed C4 automatic transmission and a Ford 8-inch 3.00 conventional rear axle, which was completely rebuilt recently.
Undercarriage
A new fuel tank, oversized front racing brakes and rotors, a balanced drive shaft, and new wheel bearings all around it looking good underneath. The power disc brakes are on front, and power drum brakes are on back. Headers and turbo muffler are also seen underneath. Lastly, a new sway bar keeps everything straight.
Drive-Ability
Slipping inside I took this one out for a long cruise and it was a great experience. There is plenty of power which goes and goes to the point where I was wondering where it all came from...then I remembered all the upgrades this consigner did, and every little bit helped with overall performance. Also, a good tuner in your corner does not hurt! All was working well, and the car ran great.
A clean well-kept car, the consigner certainly did his part to make it great. Right out of 1968 this car is currently deciding to be a muscle car or an upper end luxury cruiser. I have an idea, why not be both?.. because it can be. Put that in your pipe and smoke the tires..
