A Nice Surprise

All too often these early post-war cars look, smell and drive like “old cars” and not “classic cars”. This 1947 Super Deluxe Ford 2-door sedan is a notable exception. It is an attractively styled car without any of the sensory reminders of an older car and it starts, runs and stops like a much more recent classic. The engine is quiet and smooth-running and a delight to drive from the first time you press the starter button.

1947 Super Deluxe Eight Ford—Restored

This Ford was restored and modernized but retains much of its originality. Unlike many of these cars that were rodded, this 2-door super deluxe sedan is like going back to the Ford showroom right after the War. The car is as clean as a pin—inside, outside, under the hood as well as the undercarriage which looks almost new—and operates better than new with having been converted to 12-volt and with an electric fuel pump—not to mention the two 2-barrels and dual exhausts!

They don’t get much Nicer!

· Paint and Chrome

The tan paints in very good condition with a few stone chips that mark it as a car that has been enjoyed. The paint gleams and shows off the car’s great lines.

Almost all of the chrome was redone or replaced and gives a fresh look to this Ford coupe.

The body and underside of the car appear free of rust and approaches show quality.

· Interior

The seat upholstery was all redone in period-correct tan fabric that nicely complements the tan exterior and is in excellent condition. The door panels are in good condition as is the tan carpet and headliner, which has some slight discoloration.

· Engine

The car’s flat-head V-8 (100 hp) sits nestled in a detailed engine bay. The intake manifold was changed to an Edelbrock to accommodate the two 2-bbl carburetors; and Offenhauser heads were installed along with a Mallory ignition. It starts and runs better than it did when the car was built. The car was converted to a 12-volt system and an electric fuel pump was added to insure quick starts even if the car hasn’t been run in several days.

· Transmission

The 3-speed standard transmission shifts properly albeit with a bit of grinding if shifted too fast.

· Tires, Brakes, Safety and Monitoring Systems

This Ford has 4 radial tires that look virtually new. The car wanders a bit under speed, probably caused by normal wear in the steering box.

All of the engine/systems monitoring gauges (temperature, fuel, amp and oil pressure) work properly. Similarly, the speedometerworks, as do the lights and turn signals (yes, turn signals), although the front right signal lamp will need some attention, and the clock is stuck in 1947. The car’s heater works fine, making this a true 4-season classic that can be enjoyed when others have been put away for the season. The car also comes with an original type steering wheel that likely could be installed if the new owner so chose.

A Very Nice Example of one of the early Post-War Fords

This Ford is a restored—and largely unmolested—example of the very popular 1947 series—a car that returning GIs were rushing to buy. These original cars are highly in demand and in short supply. They therefore represent not just a great driving experience but a sound investment as well. And if there was ever a car that transports you back to the post-war period, this is it. Apart from the investment value of this car, it is hard to put a price on the feeling of enjoyment when other drivers and pedestrians wave and give you a “thumbs up.”
