GMC Insul Box Truck by Supreme w Built-in generator - bug out or prepper vehicle
1991 GMC Sierra 3500 Description
GMC K3500 Supreme Insulated box truck with 4 wheel drive and less than 5K original miles. It was custom built by Supreme Corporation in Goshen, Indiana to carry some scientific instruments around a research property. I purchased the truck 4 years ago with approximately 1600 documented miles on it and have only used this for an extra vehicle when my regular truck broke down. Engine has an hour meter mounted in dash and shows 609.7 hours so most of the engine time for this vehicle was from sitting on idle while watching sensitive instruments (which are no longer mounted in the truck). This has been maintained on a regular basis. Was told it has Chevy 350 (5.7L) engine which is great because it can be mechanically maintained by the average person. New batteries 2 years ago (this truck has dual batteries). New front tires 2 years ago. Rear tires are original and have very little wear. However, because of their age, if the truck will be driven a lot, the rear tires may need to be replaced. Original paint was peeling (as most paint did in the early nineties) but there was no visible rust so we had it wrapped with matte blue 3M wrap to protect the truck body. I have some extra vehicle wrap to include with the truck.
Supreme Corp installed a "Chiller" truck body on the truck and is accessible through the cab of the truck as can be seen in the pictures. The box is well insulated and also has a ceiling mounted AC unit with heat strip. It was not designed to be a refrigerated truck but rather a movable comfortable environment, whether hot or cold outside, for monitoring instruments and record scientific data for long periods of time. 2 small skylights/roof vents are also mounted in the ceiling. The box is lighted and has electrical outlets built in both at the top if the wall, base of the wall, and in the floor for a total of 22 outlets. The outlets can be powered by a landline hooked directly to the side of the box exterior or if that is not available, by the built-in Kohler RV generator complete with electric start which provides (2) 30 amp circuits. The coolest thing about the generator is that you don't have to fill a separate tank to run it. It runs off the main gas tank and if the tank is full will run for up to 40 hours (if you're not driving the truck at the same time). The generator has a little over 663 hours on it. There's also a Sportsman Edition, Dual Pro SE battery charger built in to the system. The floor of the box is a grey epoxy coated non-slip textured surface. Interior box lights turn on from opening front truck door or from an interior light switch next to the rear personnel door. There are stainless mounts on the back of the truck and a small bracket/ ledge mount on the front of the box for misc equipment.
There is an extra seating area built into the box area over the generator. Next to that is another built-in flip up seat with seat belt and storage underneath/inside. The rear door of the box is an insulated personnel door with a window. The rear door needs a new lock for the deadbolt or possibly a new type of lock all together. The rear bumper of this truck is a diamond plate textured step up bumper (Full-Width Pooched Step) which extends all the way across the back and is very solid. The interior is in decent shape with the exception of the radio speakers which need to be replaced (the aftermarket radio is still good) and the passenger seat which has a tear all the way down a seam on the seat which is why there is a set of new seat covers.
This truck is a very dependable truck and would make a great, fairly maneuverable prepper or bug-out vehicle since it's 4WD and has electric and HVAC already installed. It turns as sharp as a short cab pickup. With a little work it could be turned into a nice little camper truck or portable power station with room to store your prepper supplies.
Alternatively, if you're looking for a no-nonsense small mobile shop this would be great for that too. You can carry your most important tools, some supplies, show up to a remote job site, power up the generator and work for 8 hours on a fraction of your tank of gas. Plenty of electric outlets already installed and you can probably add a 240v outlet if needed.
