1972 GMC Jimmy Custom Sport Truck Description
Here is a very nice 1972 GMC Jimmy for your consideration. If you have been looking for a nice correct K5 that you can hang your license plates on and drive without spending months or years fixing other peoples previous lousy repairs, look no further.This truck was purchased from the second owners who purchased it in 1974. They took very good care of this truck throughout it's life. There was hardly even a door ding to be found on this truck. The seats were keep covered with towels and it spent most of it's time indoors.
When I purchased the truck, it had been off the road for quite a few years. I could tell rite away that it was a good candidate for restoration. I have been building these trucks for many years and have a great appreciation for them. I started off building this for a customer who i've built quite a few other Blazers and Jimmys for over the years. A month or so into it he ended up purchasing a nice cheyenne pickup from me that he could enjoy while the wether was still nice. So I've now completed this Jimmy and am proud to offer it for sale.
After a very comprehensive disassembly, all rust was properly fixed on the body. New outer rocker panels and very small parts of the front floors, and a little bit of the rear cargo floor way at the very back on each side were all properly replaced. All bare metal was epoxy primered, 2K primed and weld through primer was used everywhere possible. Everything was re seam sealed and treated way better than it ever was at the factory. The doors have never been rusted and had zero damage whatsoever. No speaker holes, extra mirror holes etc. Front fenders have never been rusted, tailgate has never had a ding inside or out either. Both quarters are straight and are and have always been damage free. When you look inside of the rear wheel well areas towards the front of the vehicle, everything is rock solid. The rear wheel wells were removed, sandblasted and repainted. I sandblasted out all of the jam areas and properly treated everything. Inner fenders, core support, battery box are all rust free and have always been that way. After everything was primed and blocked as many times as necessary, the truck was sprayed in the original white color using PPG Deltron base clear materials. The truck was then color sanded and buffing using a 3M 3 stage buffing system. The result is a paint job that looks like glass. All body panels were painted separate from the truck resulting in no masking lines anywhere. Much better than painting one all together. All of the body bushings and hardware were replaced of course and proper door and fender gaps were achieved during this process.
Durring reassembly, lots of NOS parts were used as well as lots of excellent original survivor parts. As little Aftermarket Taiwan was used as possible. I have buildings full of parts for these trucks so it makes it a lot easier to build one as close to stock as possible. All lower woodgrain trim is NOS gm, outside door handles are nos, all new GMC emblems, side marker lights, headlight bezels, tailgate chrome, tailgate banner, all weatherstripping is new, rubber bumpers, stoppers etc. are all new. Front and rear bumpers are new Goodmark GM certified and line up excellent. I had lots of parts and pieces powder coated on this truck satin Black. Inner fenders, hood hinges, brackets, seat mounts, sliders, tailgate hardeware top hardeware etc. It makes for a much nicer finish than black paint and lasts pretty much forever.I used well over 100 new correct zinc satin Black body bolts to reassemble this Jimmy. They are correct in every way. I reused as much original hardeware throughout the truck as possible. All of the specialty screws and clips were cleaned and reused whenever possible. Which was a lot. My goal was to build this as close to original as I could.
I reused the original tar floor insulation as it surprisingly survived all these years. I then installed all new Black ACC molded carpet front to back. This is very nice high quality carpet. I also used a new set of reproduction floor mats. The seats were all recovered by the local upholstery shop in correct white vinyl and white/black houndstooth. They look and fit beautifully. All of the seat tracks, mounts etc are all powder coated. The drivers seat moves forward and back effortlessly as it should. The door panels are original to the truck and are as nice as you'll ever find. As are the rear side panels. They somehow survived and are in excellent shape. Date coded on the insideJan 05, 1972. All four armrests are new, all of the felt and rubber in the doors are new, new sill plates, dash pad, glove box liner etc etc. Everything you'd expect to be replaced or restored on the body and interior have been. There is an AM FM 8 track player in the dash that has clearly been there for 40 plus years. It works and is in great shape so I left it. It's pretty neat in my opinion. Its hooked to a pair of Jensen speakers from the same era. Again in fantastic shape.
The engine is the original 350 4bbl to the truck. It and the transmission had been gone through not too long before the truck was no longer driven. It starts, runs and drives as it should. Everything under the hood is correct. Everything on the engine is as it was in 1972. Correct date coded quadrajet which I did completely rebuild, all correct brackets, spark plug wire looms, oil fillers, pulleys, brackets, air cleaner etc. I did of course replace points, plugs, wires, cap, rotor etc. The air cleaner and a lot of other parts under the hood were blasted and powdecoated satin black. I installed a new power steering pump, new lines, new rebuilt steering sector box, new tie rod ends and sleeves new AC Battery, all new shocks, pretty much everything mechanical related to the brakes front to back, Everything is in proper working order. I had the later 70's GM rally wheels sandblasted and coated in the correct silver color, then wrapped in new BF Goodrich 33x12.50x15 All terrain TA KO2's. All new center caps and trim rings of course on the wheels. There is a brand new windshield and seal in the truck, new top glass weatherstrips, door opening weather strips etc. etc. This K5 doesn't have so much or a rattle or squeak anywhere in it. The rear hatch has new weatherstripping and shuts tight. You'll be amazed at how quiet this thing is compared to a lot of others.
There are lots of new gaskets and seals throughout the drivetrain, $600 worth of new aluminized dual exhaust from the manifolds all the way back. Very high quality job. It sounds spot on perfect. Just like you'd expect one of these to sound.
Honestly there is so so much to list and mention that I did to this truck that it would just make this description way to long. If it needed it, it got it. Ive spent hundreds and hundreds of hours building this truck. If you are into these trucks then you know what it takes to truly make one of these rite. Tons of money and time. I have a restoration shop here in town and do pretty much nothing but 1967-1972 GM trucks. This truck is more than ready to win cars shows or just be enjoyed on a daily basic. The top is in excellent shape and can be removed easily for summer fun.
I replaced i'd say every light bulb in the truck. Turn signals all work, I did instal a new turn signal switch in the column so the signals now cancel after you turn a corner. Reverse lights, marker light, 4 way flashers, brake lights all work. Heater works, original cigarette lighter works, high beam low beam lights work, doors lock and unlock with the key, dash lights all work. The fuel tank was removed and cleaned, an NOS gm sending unit was installed so the fuel gauge will work for another 50 years. The AC system is 100% complete and is still charged with R12 freon. The system is in working order. The compressor makes some noise but does work. I had considered buying a rebuilt compressor but don't know where I would find more R12 to recharge it. The system could be converted to R134 if someone cares to do it.
The speedometer, oil, water, and volts gauges all work properly, the horn works perfectly. Also I installed a new Comfort Grip steering wheel package designed for the 69-72 column. I don't mean to bore anyone to death, I just want to be as thorough as possible while describing this truck. Other than the tires, wheels, steering wheels, and 8 track stereo, this ole K5 is dead bone stock. And is so much fun to drive and enjoy that way. If someone would like white steal wheels with original hubcaps and stock tires, that can be arranged as well.
This vehicle is sold as is where is with no warranties. It is not priced $20k higher than it's worth like so many others on eBay. And it's not been slapped together and Krylon painted for a quick sale. This is the real deal, a fairly high optioned cst this is by the way still in the second owners title from 1974. Making it a two owner truck at this point. The title has of course been notorized and is all ready to go. All vin numbers on the title, vin plate, frame, drivers door sticker, and glove box SPID match. The odometer shows 42757 which is 142,757. Still not bad for 48 years old. Ive so far put 21 miles on this truck since completion. I like to make sure everything is solid and that there are no issues. It might pick up another 20 or 30 but that would be about it.
The white with black top color combo is one of the prettiest I've had to this point. Which surprises me. It really pops. Im still not smart enough to figure out how people get more than 24 pictures listed on their ads.
