1951 GMC Suburban Description

1951 GMC Suburban

Several automotive companies in the United States used the "Suburban" designation to indicate a windowed, station wagon type body on a commercial frame including DeSoto, Dodge, Plymouth, Studebaker, Nash, Chevrolet and GMC. The (Westchester) Suburban name was, in fact, a trademark of U.S. Body and Forging Co. of Tell City, Indiana, which built wooden station wagon bodies for all of these automobile and light truck chassis and more. Chevrolet began production of its all-steel "carryall-suburban" in 1935. GMC brought out its version in 1937. These vehicles were also known as the "Suburban Carryall" until GM shortened the name to simply "Suburban". GMC's equivalent to the Chevrolet model was originally named "Suburban" as well, until being rebranded as "Yukon XL" for the 2000 model year.

This consignment was owned by an automotive restoration shop. No money was spared in the restoration of this beauty, and it was part of the restoration shop's owner's private collection. A showroom condition example of a 67-year-old, chrome-laden luxo-tank served as ultimate line toppers that appealed to the most affluent buyers.

Exterior
Lexus Pearl Metallic with black fenders and running boards have this truck looking just delicious. Eye candy for sure with perfect paint, straight and close gap panels throughout, and chrome you could eat off of. The front grill is worth the price of admission with its thick horizontal ribs, massive frame that says wow from headlight to headlight. A stylized red GMC logo is emblazoned on the top next to the rounded hood. Fronting this masterpiece of early 50's design is a perfectly curved bumper in unmarred condition. Seen behind the fenders are chrome highlighting strips that copy the curvaceous fenders on the front and rear. GMC moon hubcaps are centered on the steel wheels that match the Lexus Pearl of the body. These original wheels are surrounded by new radial tires including the spare.

Interior
Utilitarian steel back and armed bench seats lined up like foot soldiers in a Veterans Day parade, are draped in new leather. These are surrounded by beautiful new sliding glass windows for the back passengers, and power windows for the front seaters. The rare option GMC heating system is installed and will warm your cockles on a cold winters drive to grandma's house. Overhead a new headliner covers the inside and has Dynamat Sound Proofing Roof material installed. An aftermarket AM/FM radio is installed and envelopes the cabin and its passengers in exquisite sound, all the while being safely held in position with custom seat belts. Peering down to check your speed, the driver will experience an all new instrument cluster, right down to the gauges.

Drivetrain
A fully rebuilt 1958 235ci inline 6-cylinder mill with electronic ignition, an external oil filter, new radiator, and 12-volt alternator sit proudly in a near perfect engine bay. A brand-new OEM style wiring harness and a rebuilt 4 speed transmission rebuilt rear differential, and new power steering, all provide reliability.

Undercarriage
Clean, mean and pristine sum it up. Rack and Pinion steering, new front suspension and wheel hubs, all new brakes and drums, a new gas tank, and a full exhaust in stainless steel including the mufflers, gleam from underneath viewing.

A virtually new example of a 1951 Suburban with many upgrades, and conveniences, this beautiful soccer mom shuttler could be used on a daily basis, it is that reliable. Starts quick, runs smooth and cruises like a dream at low RPM, imagine the look on the kids face when you show up for a pickup of them and their friends after a long game! The only comment you will get is where's the video screens?
