1990 GMC Sierra SLE 1500 Description

1990 GMC Sierra GLE 1500

Known as the "Tricky Triangle" the Pocono raceway opened in 1968, and since has hosted nearly every event, every type of motor racing that can be imagined. Not your typical oval, 3 totally different curves, and totally different bankings make for a challenging setup to be fast in all corners, still trying to be figured out to this day by race teams. Set in the beautiful Pennsylvania Pocono mountains, a great place to have a major race with lots of space and 3 different curves for the challenge.

For consignment a GMC Sierra which could best be described as a double survivor. Starting life as one of the 17 trucks customized by the Chattanooga Custom Center as part of the Pocono Raceway revitalization program in 1990, 15 identical sequential numbers trucks were customized, only 1 had a big block, and one other a 5 speed manual transmission. These two were used a track pace vehicles, and the others as fan courtesy vehicles. This truck is the only original untouched survivor remaining from those original 15. There is another truck in Arizona that has been refurbished which also survives, and the fate of the other 13 is unknown. This truck has done parade laps as recently as 2019 at Pocono as a vintage race weekend example of Pocono history.

Exterior
All original and unrestored, this 2 step flare sided truck remains with straight panels, and plenty of extra fairings and spoilers. A beefy roll bar integrated into the bed protects the passengers in the cab. All bathed in silver with the Pocono logos and original truck badging. Noted of interest the Sierra badge on the tailgate is a bit wavy, due to a fire at a dealership where the truck was parked while filming a movie for HBO. Only the rear taillight was damaged and replaced, but this badge remained as a reminder of this little incident, which other vintage cars were way less fortunate. Hence the "double" survivor! Snazzy wheels and new rubber are on all 4 corners. The bed is lined and includes a removable storage bin the houses some awards the truck has won.

Interior
All original showing nicely in ribbed broadcloth inserts in light and dark gray, and dark gray bolsters framing this broadcloth. Carpet is ultra clean and in a smoky gray color. Original dash is clean and has an extra centrally mounted Cassette player with equalizer and digital readout in LED. Power locks, and power windows and A/C are noted as options that are on this promotional truck.

Drivetrain
A 350ci 5.7 liter V8 is under the hood. An automatic transmission is on back, and all is looking excellent under the hood with no rust or corrosion on the usual suspects.

Undercarriage
Some slight surface rust on suspension and driveshaft, but structurally sound, and very clean overall. Drum brakes for the rear, and disc brakes upfront, as well as fully independent suspension are noted all around.

Drive-Ability
A smooth ride with plenty of acceleration, nice handling and a quick straight stop. Very comfortable, cool A/C, and the functions were working perfectly in all aspects.

A piece of PA history in regards to the Pocono Tricky Triangle, a survivor (only one to be original), and you could say a 2 time survivor based on its near disaster in the conflagration that it narrowly missed due to being parked outside. 3 owners including Pocono Raceway, and low mileage, an interesting custom build, and a good looker, turnkey truck, bugs on windshield and all!
