1951 GMC Pickup Truck Short Box LS Engine AC PS PB Description

1951 GMC Pickup
!!! 50 Large Photos Below !!!
Up for auction here is a very unique pickup. This started out as a bone stock 1951 GMC Pickup and has been turned into a very nice street truck. We built this truck to showcase what our shop can do and take it to shows around our area. We have had our fun with it and regrettably it's time to sell it to free up some funds for the shop. The idea behind this build was to have a reliable street truck that could be daily driven and even reliable enough to take across the country if you wanted. This is exactly what we ended up with. Driving this feels like your in a nice street rod then you climb out and see that worry free finish that catches tons of attention.
The body on this truck is one of the best I have seen as far as being all original. The patina is perfect and it was 65 years in the making. I debated on clear coating over the patina to preserve it but decided not too. I like the raw and natural look of it. We also knew that we would be selling the truck eventually and clear is something that can't be removed without affecting the patina underneath. So I figured if the buyer wanted it clear coated they could do it themselves or have our shop do it. There is no major damage at all on the body, a few dings and scratches here and there but that just adds to the character of the truck. The only rust it has is surface rust. There is no rot on the body, it's very solid. The worst rust is the reflectors on the tail gate, and a metal strip somebody had placed on the inside of the tailgate to seal it up tight. Both of these just add to the trucks character but the body panels themselves are solid. The cab had a brand new floor and toe board installed but this was for clearance of the transmission and to clean it up since none of the stock stuff was reused on the floor. We also installed all new glass and rubber so the cab is nice and tight with no leaks.
The interior is what really sets the truck off and gets the most attention. It was all done to a show quality finish and the color combination matches the patina perfectly. Everything on the inside is brand new and updated. The interior was painted the original green color that the outside of the truck is. It was then sanded and polished to be a perfectly smooth finish. The seat upholstery, door panels, and headliner have a light distressed leather look that blends perfectly together with the rest of the colors. The carpet is a dark brown 80/20 loop with matching floor mats. We made two sets of floor mats with one set being for daily driver use and the other set for shows. The inside of the cab was covered with Dynamat before the carpet was installed to help keep the noise out. The gauges all work as they should and have a digital trip odometer. We also installed a high beam indicator light and a check engine light next to the gauges. We used a three position headlight switch instead of the dimmer switch on the floor to keep things nice and clean looking. The chrome steering column has tilt, turn signal and hazards lights on it. The radio we used looks period correct and is digital am/fm with Ipod and MP3 hookup. We ran the aux cable through the ash tray so it can be coiled up and hidden when not in use but still easily accessible. We installed Pioneer high output 4 way speakers behind the seat and they sound really good with plenty of bass and treble. We built custom panels that line the back of the cab that are carpeted keeping behind the seat nice and clean. The stock speaker grille on the dash now houses the HVAC controls and vents. I really like this kit since everything is hidden behind the dash and does not hang below like all the other kits. There are also vents that blow down on your feet and the factory defrost vents still work with this kit. The A/C and heat both work great. We also installed a new electric windshield wiper motor that works with the factory linkage and knob. The fuse panel was installed in the glove box so access is very easy. Also in the glove box is the engine fuse panel and an OBDII port to check engine diagnostics. The glove box was custom made out of aluminum to house all of these items. An access cover was also made so when you open up the glove box door you don't see any of the electronics and you still have storage space for your paperwork and such. There was also a custom aluminum box made to house the engine ECM under the dash. This cannot be seen unless you lay on the floor and look up under the dash keeping everything clean looking. We also installed dome light switches in the door hinge boxes so that the dome light comes on when you open the doors like a newer vehicle.
The drive train and chassis is where most of the money was spent on this build. We started off with a nice and straight 1988 S10 standard cab long box frame. Everything was completely stripped off the frame down to the bare rails. We sandblasted it down to bare metal and spayed it with a satin black chassis paint with black epoxy underneath. This paint is very durable and its what we use on all of our builds. Absolutely nothing was reused on the chassis except for the frame itself. Everything is brand new from the front to back. It now has a frame mounted master cylinder/booster, and four wheel disc brakes. The rear end was gone through and it has 3:42 gears with positraction. This makes for an excellent cruising gear with the overdrive transmission. At 80 mph the engine is at 2200 rpm making the average mpg above 20. It still has plenty of low end power to get up and go also. The engine is a 5.3L LS removed from a 2001 Silverado that only had 64k miles. The transmission came out of the same truck and is a 4l60e automatic 4 speed overdrive. This is a great combination and makes this truck a blast to drive. It starts right up and runs down the road with no issues. We completely detailed the engine as well and made the custom coil covers and engine cover. We have over 30 hours alone in just making the engine cover if that shows how picky we are about the little details. The body is mated to the frame using a kit provided by Code 504. This is a pre engineered kit that is made specifically for this application. So what we ended up with was a chassis that was more rigid than the original and everything bolts down as like it was factory. There is no backyard engineering here with some scabbed together mounts like some of these S10 frame swaps we have seen. Another nice thing about this kit is it allows you to retain the stock floor in your box. Most of the swaps have to raise the box floor to the point where you cant use the box anymore. With this truck you still have the full use of the box and you can use it as a truck! Currently the truck has just over 1300 miles. At around 1000 miles we put the truck back on the hoist to check all the bolts and re torque everything. It's all good to go and would make it across country with no problems, while also getting great fuel economy. Another nice thing about the combination we have here is that you could walk into any parts store in the country right now and they would have a replacement part the suspension or drivetrain. This makes it the perfect long hauler! We really hate to see this truck go but its time to move onto something else bigger and better. We did not keep track of the hours to build this truck because we knew from the beginning we would never get our money back out of it. It served its purpose for us and now its time for someone else to enjoy it. You will not be disapointed in this and it looks just as good as the pictures represent it as. There is a lot of information that I did not list here because I could go on forever. So please give me a call and I will be more than happy to tell you more about the truck and answer any questions you may have. My number is 641-990-1417 and you can call or text this number. If you need help with shipping I have a transport company that we work with. They have treated us great and we've never had an issue. Just let me know and I can get a quote and arrange it for you if needed. We also have alot of build photos that we will include with the truck. Also if there is anything you would like changed on the pickup after the sale we are more than happy to do so. Anything from different wheels to full air suspension our shop can do it. Below I will list most of the parts that were used in the build. Thanks for looking and have a great day!
