1991 Honda Civic Si Hatchback Description
I bought this car to be my daily driver last summer. I was so impressed with my son's fifth gen hatchback that I vowed to get one some day. This car lived up until then in the Arizona/Texas desert and is very solid with little to no rust that I can see.The Previous Owner told me he got it from an elderly lady and then it was in the P.O.'s family for many years before I bought it. It was maintained well and I have continued that. It was repainted at some time before me. The faux carbon fibre patches on the left side of the body hide spots where spilled gas took off the paint.
I have some records from before me including a replaced clutch in 2012. The P.O. said the timing belt was changed at 150K but I went ahead and changed it anyway along with the water pump. I have also changed the rear hubs and brake drums. I went to change the brakes but they're all pristine, that's how well this was kept up. Same with the suspension including the front axles, bushings, etc. Of course I changed the oil, coolant, brake fluid and I have many records of oil changes before me. I also changed the oil seals in the valve covers and spark plugs. The car pulls and shifts well. No popping out of gear, no problems shifting into gear. It starts immediately without pumping the gas in very cold and very hot weather.
All four injectors have had their seals replaced. It rattled occasionally underneath when I went around corners (not a tick). I took off the Catalytic converter and shook it, I didn't hear anything but the rattle went away. (Yes, I'm a hack mechanic). I've done other repairs including repairing the Integrated Control Unit on the fuse box to restore intermittent wipers. I also have it wired to buzz if you turn off the car with the lights on. It came to me with an aftermarket cruise control, I just took that off. It idled up and down for a while but that went away when I cleaned the Idle Air Control and replaced the PVC valve. The tach acts a little funny sometimes and probably will need to be replaced sometime.
I bought this car to use every day. There's just something about a well built but affordable car that's fun to drive that gives me satisfaction, and a fourth gen Civic is right near or at the top of the list for this. I even bought brand new snow tires for it to drive it through the winter. In the only snow storm I drove it, the car passed with ease 4WD vehicles stuck on the side of the road going up hills. I also added front fog lights to counteract the blinding lights of modern SUVs.
Anyway, I'm now giving it up because my wife is concerned about me driving without modern safety items like airbags or side impact barriers (I'm a 67 year old car nut about to retire and move where there is no garage). Also I feel guilty exposing it to salt after so many years of living outside the snow belt. I can't keep it because I don't have the room or the extra bucks for insurance.
So here is a great opportunity to get a really fine example of Japanese small car engineering at its finest. It can be easily brought to concours level or modded or just driven every single day rain or shine. An original fourth gen Si, original engine and transmission intact, ready for 100s of thousands of miles more.

Someone asked for a pic of the paint defects hidden by the black patches. I peeled one off, you can see the repainted part is off, showing original paint underneath. No rust, just solid metal. I couldn't peel off the patch under the gas door without major effort and I think it would take more paint off so I stopped.
