1956 International Harvester Other Description

This S line started off as a fire department brush truck in Minnesota, and later moved to the high Rockies where we brought it from to Ohio. It is an S 120 4X4 and is overall a great runner and solid for the age. It has an overhead valve in line six and four speed with granny gear . It cruises comfortably at 60 miles per hour with no strain. First, all of the very hard to find bright work trim is there for this one year only model. In addition it has the somewhat rare sun shield. It also came with some atypical extras including electric wipers, visor and arm rest on passenger side and also an engine block heater that works just fine. There are no drips or leaks from the engine and the clutch was replaced and works well. We rebuilt the steering box, put on new shocks and also spring bushings to smooth out the ride. More importantly, the diff was changed to 4/10’s as it came with 4/77’s, more suitable for a mountain goat than a flat lander. Figuring we would not need the four wheel drive as no winters for this old binder and no off road Baha trips planned we didn’t change out the front diff with matching gears, but, we do have new matching gears for the front to go along with the truck and will be delivered with the truck to the new owner. The 4 wheel drive system and the lock out hubs worked fine. Some place along the way it was changed over to a 12 volt system but a generator was installed instead of an alternator so it looks period. Of course that worked a hardship on the stock gauges so a set of discrete oil, voltage and water temperature gauges was installed. As is usual the switch to 12 volts causes the fuel gauge to be inoperable but we just track the mileage. The in line six has a new ( not rebuilt) carb on it from IH America, a model of the Holley 1904, but this one doesn’t leak around the bowl!

The paint on this truck is a 30 footer, with touch up spots, fading and some wear through. However, for us it just isn’t bad enough yet for a new paint job. Along with the paint comes the typical dents and dings found in a 60+ year old truck. As far as rust, the front bottom of the bed seam by the cab is rusted and had a piece of angled steel bolted on. The rest of the bed is solid and was fish plated when we got it, probably something to do with its use as a fire truck. There is a two inch round hole drilled in it which may have been for a pump or something for the fire department. There are some drilled holes in the hood which I imagine were for a siren or something. The doors are solid with the exception of two pencil size holes in the bottom on each door. However, two solid doors from Wyoming come with the truck and will be in the bed for the new owner. No holes in these doors. The front bumper is a winch bumper and is rock solid with yellow fogs lights mounted on it. The glass all the way around is good with no chips or fogging and the window whiskers and rubber is in good shape. The glass is green tint with the exception of the rear window which is clear.

The interior in the truck is almost like new. The seat cover is nice and the dash is in great shape as well as the headliner. The floor matt is also nice with no age showing. The truck has two horns, an Aooga horn and a regular one, so we put the buttons on the dash within easy reach. The left turn signal doesn’t cancel when you turn which is the only thing I can think of on the interior that doesn’t work. We reconditioned the heater box and put a new blower motor and heater core. It has great brakes with new shoes, master cylinder hoses and more importantly, good drums. While we don’t take the truck out in the winter we do occasionally drive it to shows in the fall, and that heater will run you out of the cab. We did put lap seat belts in simply because they are a good idea. There are all new belts and hoses on the truck, and it is wearing full 10 ply tires including the spare that still have the tire mold teats on them. They are bias ply to maintain the period look. It has a stainless steel exhaust and tail pie so no worries about those rusting out and the muffler is new. It has two Triple Diamond hub caps and three IH caps cause that’s all we could find but they are in nice shape for a driver. We put an old school Tonneau cover on the bed that snaps on and off and has wood bows so the bed stayed dry if we got caught in the rain. The color matches the rims and the grill. The tail gate is from Wyoming and has a solid roller bar on the bottom where most of them rust out. It was painted as close as we could to match the original color of the truck. The odometer shows 28XXX miles but who knows so it is listed at 99,999+.

You are welcome to come by and look this truck over, just let us know when it is convenient or you can have it inspected. We will also help in any way we can in assisting a shipper with pickup.
