1976 International Harvester Scout Description

’76, XLC model, was my daily drive until transmission went out in forward direction; inches along but that’s it. Reverse is fine. 304 engine, auto transmission; engine ran great. Had trouble with transfer box not wanting to stay in Hi-4; would pop out and I would have to hold it in gear. Body in reasonably good condition; some rust in usual areas: quarter panels, over rear wheels, parts of floor boards. Bucket seats, folding rear seat, sliding rear windows, manual locking hubs, 48” hi-jack, approx. 6 months on Rancho RS9000 shocks. Repair manual, parts list, spare parts. This vehicle should pass inspection. Purchased out of Denver, CO.

’78, Rallye model, was purchased to swap out transmission. Runs very strong with a 345 engine, automatic transmission, transfer case works great as well (see video: got to YouTube, search Scout II, look for gold scout; been showing up 3rd down). IH automatic locking hubs. Recent carburetor rebuild; fuel being fed by means of electric pump from gas can; didn't trust fuel tank. Also, has air conditioning system but is not connected. Purchased out of Deming, NM.

My intent was to swap out the transmission and transfer case from the ’78 to the ’76. After getting the ’78 started, I realized swapping the engine-transmission-transfer case assembly out would be the thing to do because the 345 is so much more powerful!

This gives you a daily driver if so desired after the swap and a parts vehicle for future repairs. I was going to swap engine assembly and sell for more; DIY and save! I also have some spare parts in addition to the parts vehicle: starter, heater controls, heater box, visors, dash covers, gauges, more.

These will need to be towed and need batteries; I use my truck battery to start.

Why am I selling? Moving and don’t have room or facilities where I’m going!
