This is a beautiful vehicle in just needs a few things to make it perfect. I call it the KUMQUAT. The previous owner bought it from the original owner who said it was featured in a National 4 Wheeler Magazine, I cannot confirm this as there were so many magazines on Hot Rodding and 4X4 in the 70s. This is a not a vehicle for the faint of heart or inexperienced. It is a vintage vehicle with some substantial grunt (power). There are things to improve on if you want the comfort of a modern car. This vehicle was customized in the 70s with a small block V8 Chevy 283 I believe as the later Factory Scouts would have, dual side mount glass packs exhaust, loud and hot-rodish, with orange sparkle paint, white interior with chrome dash. The wheels are massive 4 by 4 wheels and all the great attitude to go with it. PEOPLE LOVE this vehicle, they smil, thumbs up and wave!
Its a Tonka toy incarnate. It has a great rake!
If you know vintage then you will understand the joy of this vehicle. It has that vintage smell with a little and exhaust, the steering is on the loose side but tracts straight. Drives well, but you need to be on it as its old school. Its fast and fun, a great beach truck! The carb will have to be tuned to your altitude. Its starts every time and sounds like a million bucks. Fresh battery. This vehicle sat for years with the intention of getting it running but lost interest about 10 years or longer ago. I refreshed the fluids, it has two tanks, the second tank (passenger side) has no gauge. I have used it as a back up. I drive it around town with no problem, its a blast but requires full attention. It is a 3 speed H pattern transmission, 1st on bottom. Smokes a little on starts, not bad. All lights work and signals.
Things its needs and I might do if I kept it
I would convert to disk brakes. Stops fine but nothing like disks.
Add seat belts, NOT REQUIRED in 1961. maybe new seats as these do not recline.
There is a dent above the exhaust pipe on the passenger side as seen in the images.
Seals are good, rubber has held up well. The passenger side door glass with need to be replaced, its fogged.
The gas tanks are a pain to fill as you have to go slow or it splashes out, so maybe new flexible hoses for better flow. A new stereo is in order. There are some small separations in the paint with very light superficial surface rust, its a New Mexico Southwest car with NO Cancerous RUST to mention. There is surface spots here and there. All in all a great vintage example, if you wanted a show car would not take much, as its sits an eye catching very nice example!
Paint is nice bit not perfect with some scuffs here and there.
