HELLO, After just completing an 800 mile trip in my 1968 JAGUAR XKE or E-TYPE COUPE (NOT A 2+2 ) to Watkins Glen NY for the Vintage race festival, I have decided to sell the car because at my age, I would like a more modern car with creature comforts like A/C and automatic transmission. I am probably going to miss this car, but here goes:
THIS IS A GREAT CAR TO DRIVE and it draws a lot of attention at any Jaguar event! It is a numbers matching 1968 JAGUAR XKE COUPE, painted in its original color of Opalescent silver blue exterior color with black leather interior. This car was restored to original specifications in 1988 at BASETT'S JAGUARin Wyoming Rhode Island at a cost of $29000 and all receipts go with the car. Only about 15,000 miles have been put on this car since the restoration. The 1988 Bassett's restoration included a complete engine and transmission overhaul and a new clutch, paint job and wiring harnesses. I have found no rust on this car. I think the sills and floors are all original and in very good shape. I coated the floor foot wells with POR 15 paint to prevent any rust from forming under the carpets. The underside of the car does have a black undercoating- nothing hidden just coated to keep from rusting. The bottoms of both doors are in perfect no rust condition. The bonnet is rust free, the trunk/boot spare tire area also rust free. Carpetsare in very nice condition and this car has the original black colored passenger side toe board, original jacking tools and owners manual.
According to the Jaguar Heritage certificate, this cars original owner was a Mr. Lars Lenke of Staten Island NY, who took delivery of this car at the Jaguar factory at Browns Lane, Coventry England on May 13th 1968 and I have the original British number plate issued for the car in 1968.The second owner was Mr CharlesMacMillan of West Redding CT. who acquired the car sometime in 1980 andis the one who had the car restored at BASSETTS JAGUAR in Rhode Island in 1987 through April 1988; all the work orders and receipts for the Bassett's restoration go with the car and are available for review. This car was then sold to the third owner in 2001, well known JCNA and Jaguar enthusiastsGary and Eric Hagopian ofChicopee Mass. They sold the car to fourth owner, John Edelstein of San Diego California sometime in 2002 with 60079 miles on the car,and I bought the car from John in December 2013 with about 65000 miles on the car. Ths car now has 68577 miles on it- I drove it about 1000 miles per year for the past three summer driving seasons.
Since buying this car I have made the following modifications for safety, reliability and performance whilst keeping all of the original parts that will go with the car to the new owner. John Edelstein had already installed the front Koni shock absorbers and the stainless steel headers and stainless exhaust system on the car. I installed the front 4 piston calipers according to the Volvo caliper exchange outlined on the Jaglovers and JCNA websites and these larger brakes work great! I had the two Stromberg carbs professionally replaced by local Pittsburgh Jaguar mechanic Jim Boffo with a three Weber DCOE 45 intake and carb setup. I installed a new 13" steering wheel but that can easily be taken off the car and I can re-install the original steering wheel if the new owner wishes that original steering wheel instead. I installed five new Vredestein Sprint 185 X 15" tires and new tubes on the car in May 2014 and they now have about 3000 miles on them since I drove the car about 1000 miles a year. I installed a new water pump, new HOWE racing radiator from Cool Cat, new radiator hoses and anti freeze in May 2014 and this car never gets near overheating even on some of the 95 degree days we have had this past summer. I installed a Pertronix ignition and new Cool Cat spark plug wires. I installed a back up electric fuel pump and shut off valve in the trunk/boot area with a fuel pressure gauge up front near the fuel filter housing. I had the original clock rebuilt by Mike Eck so it takes a small AA battery and it keeps very good time. I had all of the front end rubber suspension parts replaced with black synthetic, ball joints replaced (upper and lower), and tie rod ends replaced by Jim Boffo and had the car aligned. I installed brand new rear springs and Boge shocks from SNG Barratt in May 2014. I installed new fuel filters- front and added a filter to the fuel line in the trunk. I installed new brake and clutch bottles and caps, sending units and the proper yellow striped hoses.I have all receipts for all work done to this car and they go with the car. The original exhaust manifolds, the original Stromberg carbs and intake, the original radiator and steering wheelcan go with the car. Buyer must pick either the original steering wheel or the after market 13" wheel but not both. I have changed the wheel knock offs to the eared knock offs and I have changed the shifter to a beautiful wooden shift handle. The original non eared knock offs and shift handle plus the original owners manual and jack with jack bag and jack handle go with the car.
This car has no wobble or shake at speed and rides very nicely. Thechrome wire wheels are in very good shape- may have been replaced atsome point, but not by me.The leather seats and leather shift console were redone in2003 by previous owner John Edelstein who also installed the non original radio and a Viper alarm system- receipts and manuals for the radio and alarm go with the car.
THIS CAR HAS CLEAR STONE GUARD/ STONE CHIP PAINT GUARD APPLIED to all painted areas under the car including the outside sills, under the bonnet mouth and under the boot/rear end area which was applied at Bassetts to keep the paint in good shape but it is not factory applied. Please see photos of the stone guard application areas. As a person who drives the car, I liked having those areas protected from stones and road debris, but it may take points off at a JCNA Concours event- just FYI. It looks good and is very hard to see, but I don't want any misunderstanding later when the new owner gets the car. Most people never even notice the stone guard on the car because it is clear. The chrome is all good- not perfect and it shines very well. All gauges work, all lights work, all switches work as they should.
The Weber carbs were professionally installed but they sometimes put out a popping sound at lower speeds and could use sometweaking although the car runs very well. The windshield is original and has some stone chips and some delamination showing in the passenger side top corner- a very small areabut it is there. The car paint is in very nice condition but does have a few chips- two at the rear hatch door and a few at the bonnet front. The front bonnet has two very small blisters which were there when John bought the car in 2002 and they have not gotten any larger- just want to reveal that they exist-I think they are not rustbutsomething got under the primer. The floors have no rust but the two foot wells have been jacked up on at some point so they are slightly pushed in from the bottom by a careless mechanic- just FYI. The car does leak some motor oil, some rear end fluid and some transmission fluid- not bad but as most old British cars leak- this one does also. I used about 1 quart of engine oilin 1000 miles. I always used 20-50Wregular motor oil not synthetic. The rubber seals are all good but the rear bumper rubber seal is hardened and could be replaced- I can include one with the car.
ALL in all, this is a very nice, very reliable driver that no expense has been spared to keep at this condition. I have many other photos that I can email to you- just ask. You can call me at 412-680-1639 with any questions. The car is located in Pittsburgh Pennsylvania. All transportation costs at new owners expense. I can garage the car for up to 30 days after purchase. This car is advertised locally and I reserve the right to withdraw this car from EBay at any time if sold off auction. Pre bid inspections are welcomed and encouraged. Thanks, Dan
