1969 Jaguar E-Type Description

Up for auction is my 1969 XKE Jaguar 2+2 Series 2 fixed head coupe. The VIN number is 1R40105 I am the second owner. I bought it from the original owner (a good friend) in 1999. It has a total of 76,682 original miles on it and has not been in a wreck. The numbers on the car all match. I have tried to keep its configuration as close to original as was practicable. A major overhaul on the car was performed by my friend's XKE specialist in November, 1996 because he broke a radiator hose on the freeway and overheated the engine. At this point the car was garaged, put up on blocks and left for about 12 years. The following is a list of the scope ($13,272) of the omnibus repair performed by my friend in 1996 when the car was returned to road operation:

Complete engine rebuild (removal from car, head & block remill, new pistons, flywheel remill, new crankshaft bearings, new timing gear/upper/lower chain/adjustor plates/chain guides/lower chain tensioner, new intake/exhaust valves & springs, 3 new engine mounts, new gasket set, new plugs/wire set/rotor & points, used idler pulley, new exhaust down pipe, new breather screen, reassemble and reinstall into car with new hoses/new filters/oil/antifreeze/water, replaced radiator caps, replaced belts, replaced exhaust hangers).

Clutch rework (rebuild kit installation) friction disc/pressure plate/throw out bearing NOS

Water pump (replacement & installation)

Carburetors (2) reworked (spacers & rebuild kit installation0

Replace front & rear shock absorbers

Refurbish braking system (front & rear rotors replaced, front & rear calipers removed/examined/repair kits installed, rear caliper pistons replaced, front & rear brake pads replaced, adjusted parking brake, replaced master cylinder piston, replaced all slave cylinder pistons, drained and refilled/bled system)

Changed all fluids (rear end, transmission, cooling system, brakes)

Replaced all fuel filters

Replace heater control cable

Replace alternator

Replace battery

The invoice for this repair is included with the sale of the car.

In the almost 15 years I have owned the car I have driven it very little; about 4,000 miles. It is an excellent driver and has never failed to start for me except once at a gas station due to a corroded battery cable. The repairs I have had with the car since 1999 are:

Replaced the radiator fans (not original) because of overheating in traffic

Replaced all radiator hoses (NOS) as a precaution, none were leaking

Removed/rodded/replaced radiator

Replaced thermostat & temperature sensor (NOS part)

Replaced a rear brake caliper with an NOS part (weeping leak)

Replaced the electric fuel pump with an NOS part

Replaced all 5 wheel wires with stainless spokes (about 5 chrome spokes were broken)

Added an NOS spark plug wire guide to restore original engine configuration

Replaced the interior overhead lining because the original was drooping

Rechromed the rear hatch hinge because it was corroded

Replaced 4 tires and tubes

Repainted the car (hood/doors/rear hatch off)

Replaced all of the “rubber” on the body

Reupholstered the front seats with leather

Replaced the radio/antenna and speakers with a Blauplunkt (1 CD)

Converted wind up clock to electric (same body & face)

Replaced 2 carburetor floats because both had lost their seal

Replaced all engine bottom gaskets (still have minor weeping leak)

Rebuilt brake master cylinder w/ NOS kit

Performed periodic maintenance religiously

The car has been garaged for its entire life. Inside and out it looks great. Better than average chrome. The paint job is virtually new as you can see from the photos. The car is free of any rust to my knowledge. There was a spot of surface rust on the passenger quarter panel that was passivated prior to painting. I have an extensive technical library that has allowed me to find and mostly use the proper parts number and method for all of the necessary repairs. If you want photos of any special part of the car let me know. I have a lift and can provide them.

I am selling the car because I am 81 and have lost the ability/motivation to maintain the car in a reliable roadworthy status; although I am not aware of any repairs being required currently. It is an absolutely beautifully designed car and really turns heads as you drive down the road. It is a pleasure to drive, you really feel in control with the unboosted rack and pinion steering. I have not reserved the selling price because I honestly intend to sell the car through this auction. Contact me with any questions you have and I will feedback both the question and my answer to EBAY to avoid repetition and create a level playing field for other bidders.
