1977 JEEP CHEROKEE SPORT W/401 ***RARE "Z" CODE 401 TRUCK*** ALL ORIGINAL
1977 Jeep Cherokee Sport Description
****EXCEPTIONALLY RARE 1977 JEEP CHEROKEE SPORT WIDE AXLE WITH CORRECT AMC FACTORY 401 ENGINE AS DESIGNATED BY THE "Z" IN THE VIN CODE****
THIS IS THE HISTORY OF MY TRUCK TO THE BEST OF MY KNOWLEDGE...FROM THE PRIOR OWNER:
"It is original paint with a bit of touch up paint on exterior and original stripe and Indian heads on each side. Engine compartment is good, interior is alright, has a few cracks on the original vinyl seats. Everything worked when it last ran so it should still be good. The history on the vehicle is it was purchased about 4 years ago from someone in northwest tn by my girlfriend. The prior owner was a jeepster since he had a lot of them on his mountaintop with his father. Kind of like a mini junkyard. Anyway, a valve on the head popped ora rod or something and the need for an engine overhaul became obvious. Girlfriend didn't want to do anything with it so we agreed I would take it over and have a friend of mine get it running. While working on the overhaul girlfriend and I broke up and that slowed down the completion of the overhaul (3 years ago). Several months later was able to come up with the money to have the head overhauled and the engine. Friend put it together and it ran for about an hour then started running rough. Pistons 7 & 8 (back pistons I think) were rubbing on the walls and they became scored.Later had same "friend" doanother overhaul with 45 over on the pistons. Same thing happened so the Jeep has been sitting since."
AT THAT POINT (DEC 2006) PURCHASED THE TENNESSEE VEHICLE AND HAD IT BROUGHT TO MINNESOTA. THE ACID FADED WHITE STRIPES CLEANED UP NICELY AS IS SHOWN IN THE PHOTOS.
I PROCEEDED TO SOURCE ANOTHER 401 AND I ACTUALLY FOUND A SECOND 401 CHEROKEE ROTTING IN A CORNFIELD IN IOWA. THE MOTOR FROM THE SECOND TRUCK WAS REBUILT BY A VERY, VERY REPUTABLE RACE SHOP/ENGINE REBUILDER IN MINNESOTA. THIS IS A SUMMARY OF THE WORK DONE (COPY OF INVOICES PROVIDED WITH SALE) :

THE VEHICLE RUNS GREAT AND I LOGGED LESS THAN 1000 MILES ON THE REBUILD BEFORE I NEEDED TO RELOCATE TO THE WEST COAST FOR WORK. THE CHEROKEE HAS BEEN STORED INDOORS AND HAS NEVER SEEN A MINNESOTA WINTER. I WILL LEAVE IT TO THE NEW OWNER TO CORRECTLY START THE VEHICLE.
THE TRUCK IS DRY, RUST FREE AND WITH AN EXCEPTIONALLY CLEAN AND STRAIGHT UNDERCARRIAGE. THE PAINT IS VERY, VERY OXIDIZED BUT IT IS THE ORIGINAL PAINT. THE REAR WINDOW WILL ALSO NEED TO BE ADDRESSED AS IT STOPPED ACTUATING FROM THE SWITCH.
THIS IS A GREAT OPPORTUNITY TO OWN A COLLECTIBLE CLASSIC AND WHAT MIGHT BE ONE OF THE LAST JEEP 401 TRUCKS TO ROLL OFF THE AMERICAN MOTORS ASSEMBLY LINE!!!
