Beautiful 1989 full sized Jeep Grand Wagoneer 4x4 SUV. Fresh from the west coast and rust free, this Jeep is in extremely nice condition and includes significant mechanical upgrades to address classic AMC Jeep trouble spots.
Most importantly, this Wagoneer has had the troublesome AMC carburetor removed and replaced with a modern GM-based fuel injection system. The fuel injection conversion was done professionally using a kit from AFI, which is based on commonly available GM throttle body injection parts. Tech support on every installation is included by AFI, and parts (should they ever be needed) are available at any local parts store, so service is a breeze! Unlike the nasty stock carburetor, this system is self-tuning so changes in altitude, temperature and fuel will not throw it for a loop. The ignition system was converted over to a Ford-based electronic ignition system, which is a huge step up from the old AMC design. Timing advance is computer controlled, so no vacuum or centrifugal advance to worry about, and much more precise control of spark. The powerful 360 cubic inch AMC v8 starts and idles better than it did from the factory!
The body of this full sized Jeep is in very nice shape with no rust issues, dents, or paint fade. The "wood" trim is in nice shape, with only very minor fading on the front fender. The factory roof rack looks great and adds functionality. Check out the underbody photos included to see how clean the floors and frame rails are on this Jeep - the vast majority of these vehicles have serious rust issues lurking underneath, but not this one!
The interior of this Wagoneer is also in good condition. The thick factory carpet is still in place and looks great, though it is worn in spots in the trunk. The burgundy seats are cushy and comfortable with no noticeable rips or tears, though the leather does show some wear lines. The power windows work, including the rear hatch. The power locks are sticky, but do attempt to go up and down. Speedometer and gauges work well. Driver and passenger power seats both work as they should. Original AMC/Jeep stereo works as well.
This big Jeep drives smoothly and quietly down the road, with a cushy ride for a truck. Wind noise isn't excessive even at highway speeds. Steering and suspension are as they should be with no excessive play noted in any of the components. No odd noises or vibrations are present. Brakes stop straight and true - the master cylinder appears to be new. For some reason, the brake light is illuminated on the dash, though everything seems to be in working order. I would guess malfunction in the brake switch, though it has not been formally tested or diagnosed.
Like any older vehicle, this one has its quirks. The aforementioned brake light and sticky power locks being among them. The four wheel drive engages manually, but will need vacuum line work to engage by the dash switch. The headliner is in poor condition, and it is likely that the sunroof needs a new seal, or to be sealed shut. While we have done our best to shore up the mechanical weak points on this truck, please understand that it is an almost 30 year old AMC, so it will have its quirks and issues down the road. However, with a body, underbody, and interior this nice, this Grand Wagoneer should be a great weekend toy and conversation piece for the right owner for many years to come!
