1982 Jeep CJ Description

1982 Jeep CJ8 SCRAMBLER California Arizona truck rust free excellent condition 258 inline 6 with 4 speed transmission. Truck has been in NY for approximately 1 year. The undercarriage is excellent. It has not been driven in NY winter conditions, only to the beach or during nice weather. According to CARFAX looks like two owners from California and Arizona from 1982 through October 13, 2015. It arrived here in NY with 145,881 miles (documented on CARFAX) and presently has 153,020 miles. This will verify that this 35 year old vehicle is road worthy and as reliable as a classic jeep can get. It has been driven seasonally for 7,250+ miles in past year which confirms that it is maintained. Upon arriving here in NY Jeep was gone over by qualified mechanic who rebuilt the carb, replaced alternator, replaced fuel tank, replaced sending unit, replaced fuel filter, replaced battery, installed new a/c compressor, exhaust from the manifold back... Most importantly the Jeep runs, drives, shifts and tracks properly.
The body on the Jeep is straight not a ping, ding or wave in sheetmetal. The body was repainted red. We believe the Jeep was originally a dark green which we only noticed when wiping off road grime from inner fenders/firewall/top of radiator and grill enclosure which really looks black under regular light. The exterior of Jeep was properly disassembled and painted. You will not find red spray overspray inside the wheel wells or frame (I do see some faint red on the gas pedal, eBrake handle, under the dash). As you can clearly see in undercarriage photos taken wit the flash on, this tub does not have patch panels covered in bondo – it’s obvious the tub is rust free look at the floor pans from underneath. New accessories were added after paint such as stainless steel door hinges, hood hinges, hood latches, cowl and grill. The seal between the windshield and tub was replaced. None of my car guy buddy's can detect original color anywhere besides firewall and inner fender under bright sun as the dark green appears blackish in the shade of the propped up hood. I would strongly consider this undercarriage excellent. My neighbors 2012 Jeep Wrangler driven in NY winters is terrible comparably. This Scrambler only has some surface corrosion no rust underneath. The undercarriage factory metal as seen in photographs. In my opinion the undercarriage is only original once, and we decided not to spray it pretty black just to dress it up. Nothing to hide. We just added a $350.00 Scrambler decal kit from Collin Brothers as we felt the Scrambler was just too plain red without the decals. The interior of the tub was treated with what I believe is LineX or some type of professional bedliner much better that the stuff available over the shelf at local autoparts store. The interior bedliner was neatly done and very durable compared to the Rhinoliner in my F350. A heat/soundproofing insulation was then installed with professionally installed carpet with neat edging/ribbing.

The interior of the Jeep has newer high bucket seats (reclining/sliding) and an additional rear seat professionally installed with proper lap belts. The rear seat has a lockable Tuffy drawer underneath it with one original key. The driver’s front seat has a 3/4” tear on side near recliner handle. There is a custom center console with 2 front cup holders, two rear cup holders and lockable storage. The dash has been professionally recovered grey to match. The passenger grab handle above the glove box has been covered grey to match. ALL gauges work. The factory clock turns by itself but not keeping time. The fuel gauge, temp gauge and red e-brake light work. The RPM gauge is newer, works and matches original equipment. The oil pressure gauge is newer, works and matches original equipment. The battery voltage gauge is newer, works and matches original equipment. There is a 1980’s or 1990’s? in dash Sony cassette stereo. Only other modification to dash is a toggle switch which controls fog lights mounted to front bumper. All gauges illuminate. For some reason the decals on the light switch and washer fluid switch are scratched up. The underdash air conditioning unit works and functions with a new compressor and what appears to be updated lines and fittings. Windshield wipers work. Windshield wiper fluid not working. Factory tilt steering. Aftermarket Lecarra aluminum and grey steering wheel.

This Scrambler is equipped with full soft grey doors and a full length grey softtop. The grey canvas has slight UV fading, windows are clear with slight hazing and marks. There are two 1" holes where the vertical door post frames meet the horizontal soft top frame on both the passenger and driver side. I would use some silver duct tape from the inside to prevent seepage.

The rear of the Jeep is equipped with a heavy duty swing out tire carrier with a full size matching spare (I have a grey cover for the spare that matches softop). Swing away tire carrier also outfitted with a red metal gas can. There is a 2" trailer hitch mounted to rear with 4 pin trailer plug (have not tested trailer wiring as I do not have the 4 pin set up). Stainless Smittybilt tubular bumper that is gleaming and solid. Rear tailight lenses are new and were replaced because originals were faded. The black gas filler neck was also replaced with new.

The chrome wagon wheels are bright and shiny with minimal oxidation. All four wheels / tires and spare are matching. Tires have plenty of tread wear and are balanced properly. Tires are Bridgestone Dueler A/T 31” x 10.5” x 15”. The CJ tracks straight from 0 to highway speeds. Shocks have been updated at some point to Ranchos. There is also an aftermarkert steering stabilizer (not new). It stops straight when you mash the brake pedal. The steering wheel is responsive and not wandering like most CJ's. The longer wheel base CJ8 drives dramatically better and a CJ7. No hesitation from carb when you get on the throttle. Hubs engage easily.

The front of the Jeep has a matching shinny stainless steel Smittybilt tubular bumper with two mounting tabs for KC lights. We installed new headlights and new turn signals as the existing were faded. The front grill is also chrome or stainless not sure. We will provide buyer with a tow bar hook for front of Jeep that came with it when shipped from out West. There is no wiring set up for flat towing.

Engine compartment is neat and proper. All wiring has been updated. As stated earlier, this Jeep has been mechanically maintained. It has not been in storage for years requiring tuning, fuel lines, hoses, belts,... All the smog equipment and vacuum lines are still in place and still all operational. The only minor thing I changed was the air filter and crankcase filter just because I am picky. Newer parts in the past year include rebuilt carb, new alternator, new fuel tank, replaced sending unit, new fuel filter, replaced battery, installed new a/c compressor,… Exhaust is newer from the manifold back. The straight six idles nicely and sounds very healthy coming out of the tailpipe.

In summary, every car guy (and their wives who never appreciate vintage cars) that has seen this Scrambler in person is impressed. I'd gladly park this in a Jeep showroom and am confident that it gets more compliments and attention than a $44,000.00 2017 Jeep Wrangler. The car is very very clean, mechanically sound, always been rust free and is being offered significantly less that other Scramblers which I would consider the same caliber as this unit. Every Jeep enthusiast has their own taste in accessories. This Scrambler is priced fairly enough that you can adjust to your styling/needs by swapping bumpers, wheels or tops and still be well under $25,000.00+++ price tags others Scramblers are listed for. I have located two local clean used half hardtops and rust free bulkheads for $700.00. New half hard tops retail for $1500.00 online and new full tub hardtops retail for $1800.00.

I believe my description is as thorough as possible. Everyone has different standards. That being said you are not buying a $54,000.00 nut and bolt restoration, but you cannot be disappointed with this Jeep at this price point especially if you parked it next to another CJ listed here on eBay for $25K. There is no CJ8 on the market as clean at this price point. This is a rust free rare Scrambler that is extremely clean and has been mechanically maintained. Pictures can be deceiving, but it is so obvious that this Jeep shines and presents extremely well. All buyers are encouraged to inspect. No joy rides. If you come with money and bid through eBay you are welcome to take it for a spin around my neighborhood if the roads are not salty. This vehicle was never driven in snow or NY winters. Parked in a heated garage.

I require an immediate $500.00 (nonrefundable) PayPal deposit within 24 hours of auction closing and balance in cash upon pick up or wire within 7 days of auction closing. Balance by bank wire okay. Will not release for pick up or to shipper until funds clear according to my Branch Manager at Chase or Wells Fargo. If you prefer to pay entire purchase by Paypal, then all Paypal fees will be paid by buyer. If you do not have financing lined up do not bid. Pick up location is Tappan, NY 10983.
