There's no doubt that Jeep scored a resounding success when it rolled out the CJ5. Such was the car's almost universal appeal that its manufacturer kept it in production for a full three decades - even breaking with tradition and releasing new models right alongside it during that time. This 1978 Jeep CJ5 4x4 Renegade is a great representative of the model - this agile mountain goat on wheels has fun written all over it and is running in top... form to surmount any obstacles in its way. While the CJ5 has an extensive military heritage and was designed with a sort of "no-nonsense" functionality in mind, its appealingly rugged demeanor attracted quite a legion of civilian fans over the years, no doubt reinforcing Jeep's decision not to mess with a good thing. This specimen arrives at the present looking pretty darned sharp. Its silver paint is in strong condition, with healthy glow from front to back and the signature Renegade ornamentation over its hood and rear flanks really stands out against such an electric backdrop. The close-set headlights have a definite military spirit to them as they sit in a dark grille that contrasts nicely with the rest of the exterior and a pair of fog lights is perched on the front bumper to light the way forward. When viewed from the side you can see another sign that this Jeep was designed for real off-road action - its wheelbase is noticeably more compact than the models that would follow it, contributing to its ability to navigate challenging terrain. A bikini top comes included to provide overhead shelter as you embark on your off-road adventures. The vinyl interior has been spruced up and features a pair of nicely contoured front buckets that offer plenty of support during more inspired driving, with ample comfort suited for more common conditions. The buckets straddle a very clean center console that provides lockable storage space for valuables, along with a pair of speakers to properly distribute audio from the Pioneer AM/FM/CD stereo throughout the cabin. The rear bench seat has plenty of miles left on it but will need a little attention to get it properly moored to the floor- a relatively minor undertaking. The three spoke chrome steering wheel wears a plushly padded cover and the dash area in front of it harbors clear and functional gauges to keep tabs on vital motoring functions. Despite the CJ5's relatively modest wheelbase, there's plenty of rear seat legroom on hand. Beneath the hood is a vital 258 cubic inch inline 6 that fires up promptly and provides plenty of power to propel this Jeep over any terrain you're hoping to vanquish. It wears a sharp compact chrome air cleaner and chrome valve cover and sits in a well-maintained engine compartment - there's no grime buildup anywhere inside and both the hoses and wiring look nice and fresh. The powerplant teams with a 4-speed manual transmission that's shifting smoothly - this CJ5 is sporting a very capable drivetrain. When the call of more rugged territory beckons, the lever activating 4-wheel drive sits within easy reach on the transmission tunnel and the feature activates easily. Power steering makes for easy navigation both on and off the asphalt, while power brakes provide low effort stops as this super sharp, able bodied ride plies its trade on a set of 15" Centerline style wheels wrapped with Falken Rocky Mountain tires. This 1978 Jeep CJ5 4x4 Renegade is a classic off-roader that offers plenty of rugged and nostalgic appeal and it would be a great acquisition for the collector and off-road enthusiast alike.
