1968 Jeep CJ-6 Description

1968 Jeep CJ6

"You're in there Army now, you're not behind a plow, you're diggin a ditch you son of a bitch, you're in the Army now!" This little bitty was written in 1917 by Isham Jones and appeared in movies and cartoons about the Army. Iconic for the Army is the ubiquitous Jeep which comes from the term GP (General Purpose).

For consignment a GP full Army style Jeep CJ6 from 1968. This Jeep was used some many years as a farm vehicle specifically to use and maintain irrigation pipe, as well as move it around. This truck does run and drive, however there are no brakes, so you can get yourself in a boot of trouble if you aren't careful with this Jeep farm truck. Since we are unable to locate a VIN this consignment is being sold AS IS BILL OF SALE, All SALES FINAL vehicle.

Exterior
The simple exterior shell is all that remains of this original Jeep and it is showing some rough spots as to rust, patina, and dents and dings. Just the facts ma'am on this sale as there are no doors, windshield, tailgate or add ons simply the shell for the exterior, and all bathed in handmade camo styled rattle can paint. A large steel pusher replaces the front bumper, and it sports a steel round stock pusher/pull bar which is protecting the front grille (somewhat!). The back of the truck is open, and the bed is showing some invasive and surface rusting. The rear bumper is another steel bar stock, showing some surface rust. In the back there are no taillights badging etc, just pure Jeep. Black steel wheels with surface rust on all 4 wheels are wrapped by black wall rubber. Left....right...left right...

Interior
The "open air" interior has suffered from the elements with just 2 front buckets resigning, and those are showing wear with the coverings mostly gone for the driver's seat portion and remaining tattered and torn. A black dash which has within it only a few round gauges and toggles is fronted by the large original steering wheel, and has quad shift levers on the floor, which is showing surface rusting and no coverings. Sir, yes sir!

Drivetrain
Consigner states that the Perkins 192ci inline 4-cylinder diesel was rebuilt back in 1981. It is fuel injected and has a 3-speed manual transmission (a T-90) and a Spicer transfer case for the 4x4 drive. A dual Dana axle setup is installed with a Dana 25 front axle, and for the rear a Dana 44 with 5.38 gears. All this menagerie is sitting in an unrestored engine bay with plenty of patina, and lots of road dust accumulation.

Undercarriage
Plenty of heavy surface rust, and some invasive rust has taken over parts of the rockers and hangers. and suspension and drive shaft areas show the heavy surface rust. The floorpans have been painted brown and are now peeling. Surface rusted leaf spring suspension is all around as are drum brakes which are not working.

Drive-Ability
She does fire up and drive however due to no brakes we were reluctant to hit the test track for fear of hitting something else, so that sums it up on the drivability. Although our test driver did say it drives fine just no brakes!

Despite its shortcomings with lack of pretty much everything, there is a definite cool charm that is oozing from this 1968 farm Jeep. The whole package of rattle can sprayed camo pattern paint, the lack of any conveniences and just the basics and there is a certain attraction for the simplistic "rat ride" with Army charm and a difficult past working history, but it has survived and with some TLC in the brakes, it could be a real interesting head turner, as it is here now in our Montezuma like hallowed halls here at Classic Auto Mall.
