History (A rare find, and a good tale): -
I took this vehicle in as a part-x against a later TD5 Hi-Cap back in 2012, when I was still running our family business (Keith Gott Land Rovers) in the UK. The people who traded it owned a Bull Farm locally to us, and had bought it brand new 18 years earlier. Now, it certainly showed that it had lived on a Bull Farm, as, I think on more than one occasion the Bull’s had taken a disliking to it being in their field and had removed it! There was not a straight panel on it – even the truck cab roof somehow!! There was no glass in either of the side doors, and the passenger side door was actually held closed with bailing twine. I didn’t really see much future in it to be honest, or pay that much..
But.. what it did have going for it was being one of the very first 300 Tdi’s, and being under 100k miles – which was pretty hard to find even then. What happened next was a total surprise though. Once we had stripped all the body work off and taken it down to a rolling chassis and the fire wall and pressure washed it for a few days, what was left was a perfect condition frame still with the wax from the factory on it.
It had literally driven out of the dealership, into the field and got coated in Bull Sh*t.
Also, somehow the bulkhead was the same – in near perfect condition, Also the seat-box, floors and tunnel. The rest was toast though…
Now, this was right at the beginning of my plans to move to the US. And even though it was still 7 years to young – I knew what had to be done. For that moment though it got put into storage and left for a few year until 2016 when, for part of my final plans for the move here.
It deserved something special doing to it, so I pretty much took all the best parts we had squirreled away in barns for projects just like this and built what you see with spec list shown. I drove it in the UK for my remaining 6 months or so while I was there and then back into storage it went until this August when it was finally of legal age to come join us here in the US.
I’m now using it as my current daily driver again, even though the A/C kit hasn’t been fitted yet – which is a bit hard in Vegas this time of year! I love it to bits but do have an LS one I’ve just built as well…..!
Now, its not a brand new 300 Tdi Defender, but it pretty much as close as you can get, keeping originality in a way.
It drives like a dream and will of course become a family member to ever buy’s it.
Please do reach out to me with any questions, Kind regards, Ben.
