1991 Lexus LS Description

Please read the entire auction description, I have described this car and the condition of just about everything. I want you to be confident placing a bid on this car. There are no surprises or hidden problems, that's the way I sell items, from a music CD to a car.

If you have any questions, I always answer them and try to do so within one day. You may request additional photos and videos, in addition to the 100 photos I have supplied between eBay and online/download viewing. The photos are very large and I have brightened them to give you a better look, as if you were standing in front of the car. You are more than welcome to come test drive the car and bring your mechanic with you, all you need is a valid drivers' license.

Why am I selling it: This has been my dream car since being a valet in the 1990s. I drove every kind of luxury car and truck, even a Hummer. But I always ran to the customers who were waiting to have their Lexuses parked. Out of countless Mercedes, BMWs, Jaguars, Cadillacs, there was no car that was as magic as a Lexus, the LS400 in particular. It was super quiet, drove like it was floating, and it was visually impressive in every manner inside and out.

I'm selling because I live on a set income due to disability, and I don't have the money to make the necessary repairs. My family helped me purchase another one of my dream cars, a convertible, it's got almost 200,000 miles but it's in decent shape.

I can honestly say, after driving my 2004 Toyota, it still cannot touch my 28 year old Lexus. My newer Toyota cannot come remotely close to the amazing ride, quietness, qualtiy and overall feeling of my Lexus. This Lexus was assembled in Japan with white gloves and unprecedented pride. I know someone will be very happy with my Lexus. The engine has only a fraction of the miles it was designed and built to endure.

The transmission has been awesome from day one, and has always operated in perfect order!

WARNING LIGHTS:
The check engine light goes on and off, but it has been driven like that for almost two years. The TRAC light is also on because it comes on automatically when the check engine light comes on for this model Lexus. The only other light that is on is the tail-light bulb light, which can be easily fixed by checking the bulbs' connections and or troubleshooting the factory wire defect in the wire loom on the diver's side trunk hinge.

Make: Lexus
Model: LS400
Year: 1991
Engine: 4.0-liter V8 engine
Drive: 2WD Valvetrain:
Four cam, four valves per cylinder
Compression Ratio: 10.0:1
Horsepower: 250 hp @ 5,600 Torque: 260 lb-ft @ 4,400

Transmission: Four-speed automatic Electronically Controlled Transmission with intelligence (ECT-i). Overdrive fourth gear, dual shift programs, engine/transmission networking Drive Wheels: Rear with Traction Control (TRAC). Final Drive Ratio: 3.62:1 Suspension: Front: Independent, double-wishbone, coil springs, gas pressurized shock absorbers, stabilizer bar. Anti-dive and anti-squat geometry. Rear: Independent, double-wishbone, coil springs, gas pressurized shock absorbers, stabilizer bar. Anti-dive and anti-squat geometry. Optional: Electronic Air Suspension with Lexus Ride Control and automatic load leveling.

BRAKES:
Four-wheel vented power-assisted discs, with four sensor, three-channel Anti-lock Braking System (ABS). This is mainly why I have parked the car in my driveway. There is a problem with the front breaks, they sometimes lock up and get heated. The few times it happened, I pulled over and allowed the brakes to cool down, and was able to drive home safely. I am guess it's the piston on the wheel cylinders, but I have not had a mechanic check it out due to lack of funds.

It does have an OIL LEAK, I believe it's the front main seal that is leaking. I just keep an eye on the oil level, usually have to add about a quart every month or two, but this can be repaired if the car is to be prefect.

HISTORY:
I purchased this car from a gentleman who works for the Toyota dealer. He bought it from the original owner traded this Lexus in for a new Toyota. This has always been my dream car, but I could never afford it. Now it needs some work and TLC and I cannot afford to fix it. The factory radio, which is included in this auction, was working except the cassette didn't work. I purchased a new Kenwood head unti and it still sounds great. This car was optioned with the Pioneer sound system. I also have the working factory amplifier which is included in this auction.

ENGINE COMPARTMENT:
The engine compartment is virtually immaculate and was recently detailed.

ENGINE CONDITION:
The engine starts on the first try, every time and runs nice and smooth under all conditions. There are no knocking or ticking sounds, at idle or at throttle. The car does not smoke, in the winter the exhaust emits the normal cold-start water-vaopr.

You can hardly hear the engine running. I have driven this car on trips hundreds of miles long without a hitch. As I believe in full disclosure, I will tell you that, in the 2 years that I have owned and driven this car, there were 2 incidents where the car lost power and had to be pulled over. After waiting about a half hour, the car was fine again, and outside of this, the car has NEVER given me problems running and driving at 80 MPH on the highway.

The power steering pump leaks, and I believe it leaks down into the alternator, another common problem with this year LS400. The power steering works fine, but a new pump can be purchased on eBay for around $70, and this will prevent the alternator from eventually failing from the fluid dripping into it.

In two years of owning and driving this car, I have only had 2 instances where the engine gave me trouble. Both times it may have been bad gas, but I cannot know that for sure. I have most always filled the tank with Super octance fuel. The only two instances where the engine gave me trouble, was after driving on the highway. The car lost power, no matter how hard I pressed the gas. Both times, I pulled over and let the car sit for a half hour, and then it drove home fine. I researched this problem and it seemed it was from the intense heat of Florida. I purchased and replaced the fuel control module which helps keep the fuel cool, since I live in Florida.

After those two incidents, driving short and long distances, I have not had any problems, and have not ever been stranded. The check engine light has gone on and off for the two years I've driven the car, and the TRAC system light automatically lights when the check engine light goes on, by default. I have driven the car for thousands of miles with no problems. Yes, for the car to the prefect, I would get it checked and fix the problem.

EXHAUST SYSTEM:
The exhaust system is all there and functions very well. The car runs and drives quietly, but as I have learned through research, there is a small defect with this generation Lexus model. As far as I can tell, this car has it. There is a slight exhaust leak somewhere in the front area of the car. It is not loud by any measure, but if you want the perfectly silent Lexus exhaust, it's supposedly an easy fix.

SUSPENSION & STEERING:
The car rides great and eats up the bumps, you would not know the age of the car by it's ride quality. It handles just the same, and you won't hear rattles and squeaks as it was designed to be just that quiet,

AIR CONDITIONING & HEATING:
The heat blows nice and warm and is digitally adjustable with the climate control.

COOLING SYSTEM:
The car has always run on the cooler side, even in Florida weather. This is an area where the car performs beautifully and consistently.

TRANSMISSION CONDITION:
If you know Lexus transmissions, they shift when and how they should. This car's transmission is one of the best parts of the car. It shifts perfectly with that Lexus crispness and smoothness.

BODY & FRAME CONDITION:
Frame: No rust that I can see, but you may request pictures if you'd like. Glass: All glass is in fine condition with no cracks. The tint is bubbled on 3 of the four side windows, but is fine. Weatherstripping: You couldn't tell the weatherstripping is the age it is, all fine. There are absolutely NO leaks from any of the windows nor the sunroof.

BODY: There are no major dents anywhere on the car, just a few dings and scratches, I still get compliments on this car. I recently had 2 brand new hood shocks installed, the hood now opens and stays up, and closes nicely. Fitment is excellent all around as you can see in the pics. The CarFax shows no accidents.

RUST?:
There are literally a few dime-sized spots of rust, one or two are smaller than a pea, and only began to rust because the paint had chipped.

PAINT CONDITION:
Paint: The paint is in excellent condition for its age, outside of a few scratched and parking lot dings, the pearl white original paint job still shines nicely and has that pearl effect.. The only issue with the paint is some cracking on the front bumper, this is clearly shown in the photos. On the hood there is some black weathering?, I haven't tried to remove as I don't want to damage the paint.

INTERIOR CONDITION:
The interior is the area that needs the most attention if you're picky. The front seats have normal wear and tear, including cracking and some splits. I have installed brand new color-matched Dickies seat covers in the front. The headliner is sagging a bit in the rear, but doesn't affect vision. The rear seat has begin to split in the Florida sun at the top stitching. There is also a slash on the rear seating area, nothing a seat cover couldn't remedy. The rugs could use a good shampoo job, the door panels are in great shape, the dashboard is also in great shape for its age.

The leather and carpet on all of the doors is in great shape for its age. The driver's door lower carpet panel needs to be re-glued, it's being held on by clear tape for now.

ELECTRICAL:
If you are familiar with the first generation Lexus LS400s, there was a factory defect, where the left-hand wiring on the trunk hinge loom was too short. This has caused some problems, and should be addressed. Because of this fault, it has activated the taillight idiot light, although all lights work correctly, tail-lights, brake lights, headlights. It has also caused the dash lights to temporarily go out, but they always come back on.

The alternator was just tested and outs out 13.60v at idle. The horn works as it should, as do the headlights, hazards, turn signals and reverse lights. Windshield wipers work, as well as the spray function. Both power mirrors function as they should and can be adjusted by the driver. GAUGES: The gas gauge works as it should, as do the dual tripometers. The RPM gauge, the speedometer and temperature gauge all work correctly.

Every option and function still works on this car. All of the power seat functions, the telescoping steering wheel functions, the sunroof functions, even down to the power headrests. The headlights, brake lights, signals all work correctly. The battery is brand new, bought from Walmart, and has a 3 year free replacement warranty

GLASS CONDITION:
All of the glass is in great condition, there are no scratches or blemishes. The car was professionally tinted years back, but in recent months the tint has bubbled on the driver side and passenger windows. The rear tint is still perfect, as is the tint at top of the windshield.

HEADLIGHTS & LENSES: The headlight, tail-lights, signal lenses are all in excellent shape with no visible cracks or fogginess. Power antenna goes halfway down, all the way down with a push, I haven't troubleshot it yet...

TIRES & WHEELS:
All 4 factory alloy 15" wheels and tires hold air and are roadworthy. The tires have plenty of thread left, but even though the tires are in great shape, they were manufactured in late 2012, which makes them about 6 years old. There are varying opinions on when tires expire, but you should inspect them or have them looked at by a professional, and keep an eye on their condition. The absolute safest bet would be to replace them with new tires.

AIR CONDITIONING SYSTEM:
When I purchased the car the air conditioning blew cool but eventually stopped blowing cool. The digital air conditioning system still seems to function, but it will need a freon recharge, or be converted to the newer freon type.

AUDIO SYSTEM:
All factory Lexus speakers with the factory Pioneer system. The one exception is, the rear 8" subwoofer was removed from being deteriorated from the Florida sun, the grill is in tact. The factrory amplifier has been removed but it also included, and it works! The factory 6-CD changer works/reads CDs intermittently, so it has been disconnected. The car is currently recently wired for a 500-1000 watt amplifier, just plug in your amp and subwoofers.

A brand new Kenwood DPX302U head unit was installed and features:

PLEASE NOTE:
In the GAUGES section there was text missing about the odometer.
The odometer stopped working in July of 2018
Since then I have filled it with full tanks every time,
many times refilling it before the tripometer hit around 210,
and before the tank went near the quarter empty line to keep
the gas clean from dirt.
Each tank or 3/4 of a tank added roughly 200 miles to the odometer
152,860 miles up until around mid-July of 2018
I have since driven approximately 1,200 miles or less,
which brings the current to 154,060. You can also check the
mileage on the CarFax report
It may have to do with the wire harness in the trunk,
but I have not messed with it as I don't know about electrical.
These are the times I filled up with gas, most always with super:

Lastly, I know I mentioned that the front brakes are bad, and that's why I stopped driving it.If the buyer picks the car up locally, it won't be a problem to drive it in county. Sometimes they don't lock up, but it was getting worse when I parked it for good, so I DO NOT recommend driving the car home on the highway or for a long distance. If need be, I will be happy to assist the buyer with shipping the car.
Thank you

On Dec-31-18 at 16:42:13 PST, seller added the following information:

As I prepare the car for delivery or pickup, I have taken additional photos and would like to add additional information for you.
Today I spent time time going over the doors and door stills. A couple of the pieces of wood became unglued from the Florida heat over the years. Today I cleaned, surface-prepared and properly glued and loose wood panels, everything in that manner is now good to go.
While detailing the interior and taking updated photos, I realized that the center post moldings between the doors, despite my efforts to velcro them on, they still need some attention. The Florida sun and heat caused the plastic fittings to become brittle and break off during the stereo install.
It's ok, and the seat belts still function as they should. For this inconvenience, I am taking $50 off the final bid price, which is enough to get it sorted.
Please view the photos I took today, they will show you the latest condition of all 4 doors, panels, switches and real wood overlays.
Tomorrow and onward, I will be finishing up the detailing process. The rest of the interior will be cleaned, vacuumed and coated with protectant, the engine will get a re-detailing, as well as the tires.
