1965 Lincoln Continental Description

1965 Lincoln Continental 'Suicide Doors' Luxury Sedan

TheLincoln Continentalis a series ofluxury carsproduced byLincoln, a division of the American automakerFord Motor Company. Introduced in 1939, the design was given European "continental" styling elements. Produced for 55 years across nearly eight decades, there are ten generations of the Lincoln Continental. Interestingly for the 2017 model year, the Continental was revived as the Lincoln flagship sedan.

The 1961-1965 Lincoln Continentals are considered one of the most beautiful sedan designs to come out of American, or, in fact, any country. The clean styling, supreme luxury and uncompromised build quality were of world-class standards.

The basic design lasted for nine (9) years, which was unheard of in the yearly change craze that was cars of the 60’s, and is still revered today, becoming a highly sought-after collector car for its uniqueness, elegance and luxury.

Many subtle changes took place over the years, but for me, the 1965 was the epitome of the model. Firstly, it was extended to increase rear leg and head room, which also improved the symmetry of the styling; the front and rear ends were simplified to remove unnecessary trim; disc brakes were added for the first time (very significant); and the directionals and taillights were redesigned for side and well as head-on viewing. (Seat belts and an oil pressure gauge also became standard.)

Now on to this car. This Arizona car was purchased in pristine condition by the former owner 13 years ago, and he took loving care of it during his ownership. The accompanying records show that he religiously changed the fluids regularly and made sure everything was in proper working order. (I recently took a 200 miles non-stop trip in her without a hiccup, averaging close to 20 mpg.)

This car is equipped with every power and luxury options including Power Steering, Power (Disc) Brakes, Power Windows, Power Vent Windows, Power Mirrors, Power Seat, Remote Truck Release, AM/FM radio (original, not some aftermarket junk), and most importantly, factory air conditioning. The engine is a massive 430 ci. V8 that purrs and moves the car effortlessly down the highway. If you haven’t experienced the ride of 60’s full-size luxury cars, you are in for a unique treat.

Paint, chrome, interior, stainless trim, engine compartment, and trunk are all in phenomenal original condition. The front bench seat has been expertly recovered in a durable vinyl and retains all the correct badges and tuft pattern. (Note that this is a single repaint car and has NEVER been restored! This qualifies it as a Survivor, which makes it even more valuable than a comparable car that has been restored.)

The drivetrain is flawless, with strong, whisper quiet operation, smooth shifting, amazing braking for a car of this size, and an indescribable ride. True mileage is unknown, but she looks and drives like an under 50k mile specimen.

If you are a car enthusiast and have never experienced American cars when they were the standard of the world, then you owe it to yourself to look into this car. If you are already a Lincoln aficionado, this is a world-class example.
