So, where else are you buying your clean, lower-mileage, collectable Lincolns anyway? This has got to be the best thing you could spend that Christmas present money from Granddad (or in my case, the grandkids) on in the new year! Reluctantly, this excellent car was turned over to us a few weeks ago with the hope of finding the next long-term caretaker. Considering the over-all excellent condition, it’s quite apparent this Mark V has been lovingly cared for its entire life. If you follow my Ebay auctions regularly you know I’ve been able to offer many clean, unique Lincolns here the past ten years. We’ve sold all four versions of the Mark V Designer Coupe and a few very sharp Mark III & IV’s as well. Finding a well-kept Designer Series coupe is a real treat! Mr. James Brown bought the car new thirty-nine years ago in the Spring of 1979 (Could it have been THAT James Brown?) It arrived here at our warehouse just south of Seattle after being charity auctioned by the widow of the second owner. For those not familiar with the Lincoln Mark V series here’s a little background info gleaned from several sources:
The final opportunity to purchase a full-sized American luxury car came in 1977 with the introduction of the Mark V. Never again would automobiles be so large, or demonstrate such a sheer presence based on size alone. For many years Lincoln had trailed Cadillac in sales, but during the sixties and seventies Lincoln finally established a look it could claim as its own, and finally started to challenge Cadillac for the top spot. In fact, the Mark series often outsold its competitor, the Eldorado. The 1977 - 79 Mark V was Lincoln's supreme achievement, the pinnacle of American luxury car design that has its roots buried in the age when bigger was better, style was based on grand visions, and a powerful engine under the hood provided status and became part of the American dream.
Since Cadillac had down-sized its sedans in 1977 and, two years later, the Eldorado, the Continentals were the final full-sized American luxury cars. To commemorate this milepost, Lincoln introduced the Special Designer Series cars. Available in models commissioned by the fashion houses of Givenchy, Bill Blass, Cartier and Emilio Pucci, each had its own unique paint color, leather and fabric options found only on their edition. In the late summer of 1979 Lincoln put its customers on notice that this model year would be their last opportunity, and they'd best not put it off for long if they wanted a new traditional luxury car.
CONDITION
Ever spent an afternoon driving a classy, vintage Lincoln? What fun! Smooth is the word for sure. Smooth powerful acceleration. Smooth handling in the curves or on the highway. Comfort, styling, and versatility all in one gorgeous ride. For my money, these Mark V’s are the best value for the overall driving experience Lincoln’s ever offered. Look over my photos and I’m sure you’ll agree what a find this is. In many ways “time capsule” is a good adjective to use when describing this boulevard cruiser. I know you’ll admire its provenance. All the window glass is fine. The exterior has had one quality respray to the original “Crystal Blue Metallic” and is in excellent condition. There are no dings and no rock ships or paint scratches. Climb over, under and throughout - I know you’ll come up smiling! You’re NOT going to find body rust where it typically appears on cars from other parts of the country. Yes, the Puget Sound region is famous for rain, but our winter roads are rarely salted. If at all, we only have one or two days of light snow a year. Really, everyone panics and stays home.
Total 1979 production of these last Mark V’s totaled 75,939. Of these only 2,262 (3%) were built as the Givenchy Designer model and were the most understated. Interestingly, it appears this car was ordered without the vinyl half-roof seen on most Givenchy’s, making it even more rare.
Mechanically the car seems quite strong. Even after sitting in my warehouse for a few days at a time it never fails to start right up with the first few cranks. You just cannot beat the great 400 CID motors in these ‘79 coupes! Pump the gas a few times, turn the key and it starts right up, even when cold. The C-6 automatic three-speed transmission shifts great and we all know how good Ford/Lincoln rear differentials are! The data plate specifies it as a 2.75:1 Traction-Lok model.
The original factory-optioned turbine-style alloy wheels are straight & true and wrapped with excellent TOYO 800 Ultra-Premium touring radials. Each has at least 80% remaining tread. We had a complete tune-up and oil change done before I began using the car as my daily driver for several weeks to be sure of the overall mechanical condition. I’ve spent days both cruising the freeway and inching through rush hour traffic and can’t find fault with the way this Lincoln runs or drives out.
My interior photos clearly show the great front and rear upholstery. ’79 Givenchy cars have a subtle seat insert and came with either dark blue or white leather. You’ll be quite impressed with the condition of the dash gauges, too. They’re as clear and bright as the day this rig left the Wixom plant on a September afternoon all those years ago! The original carpets are clean and un-faded. A small repair was made in the distant past to a section near where the driver’s left foot normally rests. The headliner is just about perfect. If you’re planning a road trip, the cruise control works great! Though I’ve only found a few things, I always try to point out negatives as well. While the heater and fan will keep you toasty warm, plan on having the AC system serviced/recharged to blow colder next summer. Both the small power wind-wing windows and the main glass go up and down just fine. For those wanting to pop in that old “Saturday Night Fever” eight-track, the original Ford Quadrasonic AM-FM is still in place. While driving through the carwash yesterday, we did get some leakage from the glass moonroof. I'd suggest replacing the gasket seal if the vehicle ends up going to a rainy environment.
We have had many of our previous buyers from as far away as Alaska, California, the east coast, Canada and even the Mexican Baja fly in here to the Seattle-Tacoma International just a few miles from my vehicle storage warehouse in Auburn. I’m happy to meet you there at the airport and you can begin the drive home the same day! While I have no qualms regarding the mechanicals on this vintage Lincoln, you've gotta admit it's earned the right to be transported along to its next caretaker rather than undergo a cold wintertime road trip. Nobody wants to be changing a flat in the middle of the night during a Midwest snowstorm!

You’re more than welcome to do this before the auction ends.

The costs of shipping the vehicle and company chosen are the responsibility of the BUYER. Thecar can be stored free of charge at our location for up to two weeks after the auction ends and full payment has been made. We’ll charge $20 per day beginning the 15th day.
Because the Lincoln is advertised and for sale locally, we reserve the right to notify bidders and cancel this auction early if the car is no longer available for sale online. It is being sold as-is, where-is, with a clean title.
