1978 Lincoln Continental Description

Despite decades of engineering progress, nobody has managed to duplicate the floating, effortless feeling of a true American Luxury car like this 1978 Lincoln Mark V. With a giant V8 up front, chiseled features, just 5784 original miles, and a long list of features, this is as close as you're going to find to the new luxury car experience, circa 1978. If you were at the top of the world in the 1970s, THIS is what you drove. With so few miles, you know the bodywork is excellent. Body gaps and fit are still just as the assembly line workers bolted it together, and the paint is as nice as 1978 technology would allow, and it's surprising how good it really is for the era. Code 1NYE Dove Gray is elegant and sophisticated and doesn't date the car as badly as some of the other choices available in the '70s, making this one a great choice for the serious collectors. The original vinyl padded half-roof remains in outstanding, unblemished condition thanks to years of careful ownership, and the chrome is factory fresh (and there sure is a lot of it!). Lenses, the hood ornament, and the rub strips along the lower flanks of the car are all in showroom condition, meaning that someone put this car away and kept it properly stored. And yes, the folding headlights work properly; this really is as close as you're going to find to a new 1978 Lincoln Continental.Inside, the gray velour interior is the epitome of '70s luxury. Sure, it looks a little bit like Hugh Hefner's living room, but you can't argue with the preservation and amazing comfort levels. You are enveloped by a soft power driver's seat, which offers plenty of support for long-haul cruising, making this a fantastic road trip car. There are a lot of controls for all the power options, ranging from power windows and locks, to cruise control on the steering wheel, to the Twilight Sentinel that automatically turns the headlights on and off. Of course, A/C and a tilt wheel are included, as well as an AM/FM stereo that sounds great in the hushed Lincoln interior. Deep pile carpet and tons of sound insulation reduce wind noise to little more than a whisper. What's better is that everything is fully functional save for the power antenna, which is pretty common on any vintage vehicle. Even the trunk shows well, with mouse fur mats and what is likely original spare tire with a complete jack assembly.Lincoln's 460 V8 won the displacement war, as Cadillac downsized to a 425 V8 in 1977. Entirely original and showing proper maintenance, the engine bay is packed with wires and hoses, all dedicated to making the big Lincoln waft along in eerie silence. The big V8 makes enough torque to give the sensation of limitless acceleration, much like an electric motor, and drives the power accessories without hesitation. Hoses, belts, and other routine maintenance items have been replaced, but for the most part it's 100% stock and original under the hood, needing little more than a good cleaning to be ready to show. It's likely that things like the ignition components are original, so if you intend to drive this rolling time warp, a proper tune-up might not be a bad idea. A C6 3-speed automatic shifts almost imperceptibly, and with 2.73 gears in the 9-inch rear end, this car is as smooth a highway cruiser as you'd expect. Unblemished alloy wheels wear recent 225/75/15 whitewall radials for a classic Lincoln look. The world will never again see cars like this, and you'll be amazed by how well this one looks, drives and handles.
