The founder of Lotus, Colin Chapman designed cars using the mantra “build lightness” into a car. The Esprit is the epitome of this theory. Employing a lightweight center backbone chassis coupled with a lightweight fiberglass body and a powerful turbocharged motor the car is light and nimble and offers performance that was amazing for its time and can still keep up with many modern cars. The car on offer here is a 1988 Lotus Esprit Turbo “Commemorative Edition”. This is a rare car, built to commemorate lotus’s 40th year in business, only 88 were built. This is car #76/88 (as noted on the plaque on the passenger dashboard). The cars were made in pearlescent white with a two-toned blue interior. The car is in excellent condition with only 21,050 miles has been very lightly driven and always adult owned. The engine, transmission and suspension are all original and the car is in stock unmolested condition. The car just had a full service, including timing belt, water pump, seals and gaskets as well as all fluids and filter. The interior is trimmed in full light and dark blue Connolly leather with grey pigskin inserts and indigo blue carpet. Often a weak spot in these cars, the interior has held up well. The drivers seat has mild wear on the drivers bolster, and there is some stretching on the leather on the center console. The original carpets are excellent. The mid-mounted 2,174 cc 16-valve DOHC turbocharged 4-cylinder engine drives the rear wheels through a 5-speed all synchromesh manual transaxle. A Bosch K-Jetronic fuel injection system and HID electronic ignition is incorporated to induction. Front and rear suspension are independent and brakes are hydraulic split circuits with a vacuum servo. Engine compression is 8.0:1 and turbo boost is 9.5 psi. Engine output is 215 bhp with 220 lbs/ft torque. 0-60 mph takes 5.1 seconds and the top speed is 146 mph. (All measurements quoted above are taken from official Lotus specifications.) The Dunlop G/T Qualifiers are excellent with plenty of tread, and the wheels look good some minor discoloration is evident. The brakes are in excellent condition as are all suspension bushings. The paint appears to be original is in wonderful condition with a bit of patina and only minor nicks around the car. The car has never seen a winter.
