The Lotus Europa is a two door mid-engined GT coupé built by Lotus Cars from 1966 to 1975. In 2006, Lotus began production of a totally new, Lotus Elise-derived design, a mid-engined GT coupé named Europa S. The original Europa used Lotus founder Colin Chapman's minimalist steel backbone chassis that was first used in the Lotus Elan, while also relying on its fibreglass moulded body for structural strength. The Europa was based on a design sketch by Ron Hickman to compete for Henry Ford II's contract to build a Le Mans race car in the early 1960s. In all, Lotus built about 9,000 Europas during their run and 622 that were produced in 1974.
Condition Report:
This vehicle has been stored for years. It needs to be disassembled and restored and is not for the faint of heart. While it appears nearly all original, it needs to be completely restored. It does not roll, the tires are dry rotted, the car is dirty, the paint is faded, and the engine may be stuck. The interior is starting to show wear and needs a good cleaning as well. There is no broken glass and it appears to be fairly complete. It also has a clear title. The trailer shown is included in the sale. While it is home built, the wheels on the trailer do roll (no tires) and it can be loaded by forklift or the buyer's winch onto a larger trailer that will need to be extra wide. The buyer is responsible for transportation and any loading issues and securing the vehicle on the trailer at the time of pickup.
To summarize, it is our opinion that this vintage Lotus would be a very nice addition to anyone's collection but needs a complete restoration and is being sold as-is-where-is. This rare find would make a great project for the Lotus enthusiast, father and son or weekend mechanic.
