Evolve Motors is pleased to present this timeless Mercedes – Benz 560SL!
What We Know:
This classic 1986 Mercedes 560SL was born into the eclectic R107 family, with an ever – growing fan base. The timeless lines and sharp angles were a transition from the early SL’s, and people loved them. Still offering a hard top / soft top combo, this little roadster came equipped with ample power, thanks to a 5.6L V8, which was an uncommon trend from European sports car manufacturers of the time, which mostly focused on high revving 4 & 6 cylinders. As a matter of fact, the later SL’s were equipped with larger V8’s, mainly for American’s seeking that V8 power of the other domestic brands.
This particular example is a nice, dry survivor. We were told from the previous owner that the odometer became inoperable before he bought the car, but was assured with service records that the car had less than 80,000 on it when he bought it. He then put less than 5,000 on the car himself. We just want to clarify that we cannot state the actual mileage at this time, but estimate it to be between 80 – 85,000. Regardless, their have been some recent updates on this car to ensure it still has a lot of life left in her!
The Exterior:
This Mercedes shows well on the initial walk around. It is in fair condition for it’s age, but does show some blemishes here and there. Aside from the minor dings, chips, and some faded clear coat in the driver door, the car’s got really nice lines. The sheet metal is all original, with no bondo or rust. The trunk and rear cowl do have some heavier scratches on them, as most of these SL’s do, just from installing and removing the hard top over and over again. We were told that the hardtop and hood were both re-painted in 2015, and both match up nicely. The entire storage area for the soft top looks great, nice and dry. The soft top itself is also in great condition, with no cracked windows or leaks. We do note that inside the soft top some of the stitching has come apart on one of the support braces, but isn’t really a problem to the overall function of the soft top. The underside of the car appears to have been undercoated long ago, and has kept the bottom side extremely clean and dry. Aside from the few blemishes, this car’s exterior shows very well and has tons of potential.
The Interior:
Slide on into the well – bolstered captain’s seat and take stock of your surroundings. Imagine it’s 1988, there’s no wonder this thing had a sticker price of over $62,000! It’s got options some new cars don’t have. The interior is in really good condition, from floor carpet to seat leather, minimal wear and tear on most all surfaces. As with most mid 80’s Mercedes, the finish on the wood-grain center console has seen it’s better days, and is showing some cracking and age. The Becker radio has been replaced with a newer CD player with AUX hookup. The headliner for the hard top shows some light staining, but nothing out of the norm. All gauges and switches are in good working order, aside from the odometer that we disclosed earlier on. The trunk area is also very neat and dry, and looks as if it was hardly used. All in all I would say the interior is the shining star for this 560.
Under the Hood / Under the Car:
As we stated before, the underside of the car had an undercoating installed some time ago, keeping it very clean and dry. Aside from a dry bushing here or there, and some very light seepage coming from the rear end, there is really nothing negative to note on the bottom side of this well kept Mercedes. Under the hood you’ll find a well detailed engine bay, holding a powerful 5.6L SOHC V8 engine. This isn’t your typical rumbling American V8 though. This 5.6L purrs to life almost subtly. The V8 power is apparent when you decide to press down that go pedal. The car drives nice and straight down the road, and even while braking tends to track in a straight line. The transmission has no notable clunks or hard shifts to speak of. The front suspension has undergone some recent updates, including ball joints and tie rods. We also did a full tune-up on the engine, just to make sure she’s going to be a great roadster for the new owner. This SL is ready to go!
Final Assessment:
If you’re looking for a nice little convertible to have some fun in, take some road trips, and maybe cruise to a car show or golf course here or there, this is your ride. If you want a car that will get you into the classic and collectible car scene for not a lot of dough, this is your car. If you’re looking for a #1 concourse car with no flaws whatsoever, this is NOT your car. This is a great little car that shows pretty common wear and tear for any 28 year old vehicle. These rust free 560SL’s are starting to climb in price, and will continue to follow that trend, just as the other SL cars of previous years have. Not saying that it’s an investment grade car NOW, but who knows what the next 5 years could bring for this market? I only see upside potential in these clean, well cared for SL’s. If you agree, give us a call today at Evolve Motors to ask any questions, or simply make her yours! This one won’t last long!
