1975 Mercedes-Benz 200-Series 280S Description
First things first:If you win this auction, you will need to tow her to your garage / shop. This is a 40 year old car with an unsolved carburetor issue. You will have to replace / rebuild the original Solex carburetor (included) or finish the replacement with a Weber that I attempted. As of now, I can get her to run, but you'll have a rough idle and occasional stalling in idle when warm. I am selling my 1975 Mercedes 280S because I have to make room in the garage. "Audrey" has been a member of the family for a while but I need space for a daily driver. She has been garaged under my watch and the previous owner's and there is only minor surface rust. In case you have good eyes, it's NOT a 450SEL, the previous owner just badged it as such on the trunk. It is indeed a 280S.
2.8L straight 6 carbureted M110 engine
Body is straight, paint immaculate and interior redone and like new
You'd best want to tow her to your garage / shop. It needs a couple of hours of work to get the carburetor running well again. See below, it's a doable job for someone with more knowledge than me. Here is the good stuff:
Dry cold compression on all cylinders in the 110-115 range
New starter motor ($600)
Original 3-speed automatic with kick down shifts smoothly
Second paint in metallic bronze, very high quality and very few imperfections since she's been garaged
Extra Weber carb ($600) kit
Includes an original, unmolested Becker Europa II radio which alone is worth a nice chunk of money on Bay
Does NOT have to be smogged in California
Replaced all coolant and fuel hoses in engine bay
Comes with a bunch of extras like brake pads, filters that I'll give you for free
Tires are great, lots of thread
I installed the Pertronix Ignitor II kit ($150), so no more replacing / gapping points
Comes loaded with options: Pneumatic central door locks (working!), A/C (compressor runs, it blows a little colder, but not by much), even cruise control
Here is the stuff that you want to consider that needs fixing:
Attempted a carb swap from the original Solex (included) to a Weber but never got it done. Up to you to finish the job. The original Solex could also be used and rebuilt / replaced. It is warpep slightly by 40y of sitting on top of the intake which can cause rough idle when warm.
It likely had a slight impact on the front left, as the bumper sits slightly recessed and the coating around the shock strut tower is cracked. There are some repairs in the wheel wells as well.
The engine is leaking a drop of oil every so often and oil has accumulated over the years. I have never had to top it up though and my mechanic said it's simply a gas pump seal gone bad.
Battery tray missing due to corrosion, battery on a wood block which works, but you'll want to fix that too
You'd need to address alignment and shocks. She is pulling slightly to the left.
This is probably as easy as you'll find one of these in this condition if you are willing to touch a wrench. Hope Audrey finds a happy new place. Please note: I am proving and accurate and honest description of everything I know about this car. I am pricing it to sell quickly and at a level where the parts alone are worth it, but as it is 40+ years old, there might be numerous other things you want or need to address that I am not aware of. This is an as-is offer and you'll be responsible to address / fix any problems.
