1980 Mercedes 450SL Roadster Convertible Hard & Soft Top
1980 Mercedes-Benz 400-Series Description
This is an auction for a 1980 Mercedes 450SL with the hard-to-find matching hardtop. I am listing this for my mother-in-law. It has a clear BONDEDtitle in her name. It is the responsibility of the bidder to insure that his/her state accepts BONDED titles before bidding. All sales are absolutely final.
EXTERIOR
- Body: There are a few minor surface rust spots and paint chips in the paint. I point these out in the video. It has never been wrecked that I'm aware of. The body is straight. The paint has some fading.
- Tires: A new set of matching Tiger Paw tires was put on less than a year ago and have less than 400 miles on them.
- Suspension: A new set of 4 Gabriel shocks were installed about a year ago. I know of no suspension issues.
- Engine: The 8 cylinder has plenty of power and torque. It is sometimes hard-starting and sometimes idles a little high.
- Transmission: It shifts smoothly with no clunks, no grinds, and no other negative noises.
- Brakes: They work and it stops as expected with no squealing or other noises.
- Exhaust: It sounds like it should. It isn't loud. I saw no evidence that it needs replacing.
- Lights: Headlights, fog lights, blinkers, tail lights, backup lights, license plate light all work as expected.
- Convertible top: The original matching convertible hard top looks great on the car. The convertible hard top was an upgrade from the factory which added several thousand dollars to the original price tag. The soft top would need to be replaced.
- Air conditioning: I have been told by several people that the 1980 Mercedes has a complicated heater/air conditioning system. The a/c work but it leaks down at one of the hoses. It was dye tested and I can show you where the leak is. There is a toggle switch to manually turn the compressor on and off. I have not tried the heater.
INTERIOR
- Instrument Cluster: The instruments work as expected with the exception of the odometer, clock (which is a common fault), and the oil pressure gauge (sometimes it works and other times it goes all the way up). Three other complete instruments come with the car. I don't know if the speedometer is accurate. The instrument bezel/cluster needs to be fully mounted in place. It is currently loose.
- Seats: The leather seats have no visible rips or tears. The leather could probably use a conditioning cleaner to make them really soft and plyable again.
- Dash: The dash is cracked. A previous owner glued something on it to cover up the cracks. The glue is visible on the dash. There are several options to conceal the cracked dash such as plastic slip-on covers or carpeted looking pads.
- Radio: The radio is not original and does not work. I assume it isn't hooked up or blown fuse. Since it's a cassette player, you'd probably either want an original type radio for this car or a modern one with bluetooth, xm, etc.
- Windows: There are no cracks or chips in any of the windows. The drivers side window isn't working but it's all the way up so water can't get in. The passenger side window works as expected.
