Very nice example of the top of line mb in 1986. Starts instantly, drives, shifts and brakes smoothly and predictably. Note panel gaps in photos, nearly perfect! No evidence of any accidents, car is very straight and solid underneath, appears that much of the factory undercoating is still intact. No corrosion anywhere.
This is an estate car which was owned and babied by a 92 yr young enthusiast. The last 10 years he started the car frequently, but drove it very sparingly, putting just a few hundred miles on the car.
Unmolested, very original right down to the original 5th alloy wheel with original continental tire never removed from trunk. Same for complete original tool kit and first aid kit. Paint is remarkably nice with only a couple of bb size blems which have been touched up with the correct OE base color and clear.
Removable hard top: paint, trim and glass are in excellent shape as is interior with the original carpets showing very well. The dash is flawless, rare for an SL of this age as the dash panels typically dried out and cracked. This car has obviously had excellent indoor storage most of it´s life.
Driving ReportI put some fast miles in on the interstate and find the car drives wonderfully. If you put your right foot into it, you'll find out why these cars were so well loved. This thing has some serious smooth acceleration. I see no fluids under the car after the highway road test, all fluid levels under the hood look good.
Cosmetic IssuesOther than the mentioned paint blems and a few light scratches consistent with light usage of the car, paint, trim, glass and rubber components are good to excellent. The leather seats are in good shape with the only wear evident at the vertical outside entrance to the driver´s side. No tears, rips or blems otherwise to carpet or seats.I have not removed the hard top to inspect the soft top or the storage area for the top.
Functional IssuesThe Air Conditioning is not blowing cold (compressor turns normally). I see no evidence that the cooling system has been converted to134Aso it would be a good time for a new owner to do that.The cruise control is not workingEverything else electrical works well, including the electric clock and electric antenna.
