1985 Mercedes-Benz SL-Class Description

1985 Mercedes-Benz 500SL Euro Spec Car.
Attention Ebay. This is a European market vehicle with a non standard vin. VIN # WDB1070461A025506
1 Owner since new. This car was brought to the United States when it was new in 1985.The car was federalized in 1986.The car currently has 77800KM or 47800 Miles.Carfax and Autocheck are perfect.
This car was purchased new as a European delivery by a local attorney, who bought the car and took delivery in Germany in the fall of 1985. He had the car shipped to the US in early 1986.
Now here is where these cars get interesting. These 500SL's were imported by a myriad of importers in the US taking advantage of the strong exchange rate on the dollar and brought these cars here and had every hack job mechanic work on them to get them to pass Federal Regulations, i.e.. DOT approved headlights, ect. The interesting thing is most of these cars were imported in the 1990s and 2000's rather then when they were new. Gauge clusters were swapped out to US units by butcher mechanics to make them work. You then had absolutely no idea how many miles were on the car by the time you got it. Worn out high KM cars were cheaply exported to the States, new clusters swapped in, and the cars were sold at a premium. This constitutes 90% of the cars on the market.
This car is not the case, It has had one careful owner since new. The maintenance log is clear and concise from 1986 onward. The cluster is the Euro Spec cluster with a MPH gauge face that records in KM. So, it shows 77,000 on the odometer, converted to KM, it equals a little less than 48K original miles. This is the case with most cars that were "correctly" converted to US specifications.
The owner hated the "wing" so in 86 he had it removed, and the holes welded up, I suppose it would be easy to reinstall, it is the original trunk lid, and it is the only thing that was ever painted on the car.
The car really looks brand new, supple interior, excellent veneers, dash is very nice, minor cracking by defrost vent (pictured) very little bolster wear, beautiful carpets and mats. The original Becker Grand Prix sounds as good as it ever did, which is...marginal at best. Spare has never hit the ground.
There is absolutely no rust or corrosion of ANY kind on this car and it has had no paint work, aside from the deck lid, the deck lid was painted in 86 due to the wing removal. The paint is a even .42 mils on the car indicating the no paint work. No touchs ups, blends, ect. The chrome and stainless is like new, no hazing, dents, or dings.
The hard top and stand are included. The hard top is perfect. The car has DOT headlights on it, the original wiring, sprayers, ect. are there for the modulars, if that suits you, but the modulars were removed in 1986 and were illegal to operate on the street in the US back then. I do not have them.
All in all this car is about the top 1% condition wise of all 500SL's in the US. It is truly a unrestored time machine.
The car wasn't utilized much in the past 10 years, so in the past few months. $4,200 was spent on the AirCon and it was completely overhauled, from evaporator to condenser. A/C is ice cold. A additional $3,500 was spent on a new Mercedes full exhaust system, the original rattled a bit. $3,000 was put into the suspension and new Firestone tires. The car was also just fully serviced, $2,700 to include top end gaskets, full tune up, injector balancing, full fluid exchanges, ect. Another $2,300 was put into the brakes and everything was rebuilt Master, Calipers, pads, ect. The fuel system also has new pumps, $800. So, in the past year...$16,400 was spent on the car to bring it up to standards that I would let my mother drive across country. Yep, I have all the receipts as well.
This is about as well documented and as well sorted real deal 85 500SL as you can find. The pre 85's had terrible mechanical fuel injection systems, never run right, and are far less desirable.
This is the car you have been waiting for! Faster and better looking and more desirable than any 560SL.
