1990 Mercedes 300GE Gelaendewagen (GWagon or GWagen) 4x4 W463
1990 Mercedes-Benz G-Class Description
I bought this 1990 300GE around 2005 from a guy in Denver. I drove it for several years as a daily driver, but eventually I got a different daily driver and the G sat in the garage most of the time after that. (It did sit outside for a few months, which is when the clear coat on the hood started to go bad.) A few years ago a friend needed something to drive, so I loaned him the G for several months. I've put about 60,000 miles on during the ten or so years I've owned it.
It has locking diffs front, rear, and center and the last time I used them (last winter) they did all work - engage and disengage, though the indicator light on one of them that shows it's locked didn't come on)
It does run and drive and I use occasionally to haul things, but it really needs some TLC and repairs. Following is a partial list from memory:- The front diff makes noise when your driving. It did it when I got it and still does it, and, as far as I can tell hasn't gotten any worse. I've taken it to several shops and the best guess anyone has is that the shims in the front diff aren't set up correctly, but no one's wanted to work on it. The local Mercedes dealer did offer to replace the front axle, but I think it could be fixed a lot more simply than that.- There's a piece of metal at the back that's supposed to be welded to the frame and one of the gas tank straps attaches to it. That piece is (oddly) broken. I ordered a new one from the dealer years ago and got it, but never bothered having it put on.- The fan blower only works on one or two speeds. I got a new resistor pack for it years ago and never installed it.- Driver's seat has some wear which has been repaired, but not elegantly.- Most of the power door locks work, but something's mixed up and when you lock one door it unlocks another. It used to work correctly. I haven't tried to diagnose or repair.- It has AC but it's not coming on.- Various dents and dings and imperfections in exterior and interior.- The drivers-side airbag is missing. There's a cover on the steering wheel from a non-airbag Mercedes steering wheel, but there's a connector inside that for the airbag. It was like that when I got it.
I had a new fuel pump installed last year.
I also have the brush bar for the front and brush guards for the front turn signals and rear lights.
