1980 Mercedes-Benz 400-Series Description

1980

Mercedes-Benz

450 SEL

What a great example of a true classic survivor. Originally purchased in Connecticut in 1980, it made the classic snow-bird trip to Florida. After some time, the grandson took possession of the car, but wanted something newer, so it was traded and I purchased it in 2004. It had 99000 miles on it then. I have taken care of the car replacing the fuel injectors, exhaust system, brakes, and many other items. I have driven the car regularly. It has been registered with MBUSA’s Mercedes-Benz High Mileage Award. Today it has 205000 miles. AC has been converted to 134a and works great. Sheep Skin for driver seat is just as you suspect, the original leather is torn, but the Sheep Skin looks and feels luxurious. The engine runs well, and does not use oil, it does not smoke. The brakes are firm, the transmission shifts as it should through all gears. The car rides like a dream floating down the road at interstate speeds and even faster. Radio has been upgraded to a Pioneer which will connect through a wire to an iPhone or Android for your music if you prefer. Rear speakers were upgraded and there is an amp in the trunk. The car does have a salvage title due to a minor accident where the rear bumper was broken. I couldn’t let this car go to the insurance company, so I bought it back and had the repairs completed. This car comfortably can be drive home. It is a 38-year-old car and has a few issues. The clear coat is chaffing as can be seen from the photos. The cruise control does not work. The Power Antenna does not retract on its own. You will not find a more dependable better-looking survivor for the money anywhere else. This Mercedes-Benz has been a dependable driver for our family, and we hate to see the Silver Bullet go, but we just don’t drive it much anymore and this car was made to be driven and enjoyed.
