1959 Mercedes-Benz 200-Series -- Description

1959 MERCEDES BENZ 220S CABRIOLET --Gelbcreme (Yellow Cream) with Red Leather interior and Red carpeting, Black cloth top, 4-speed manual, Restored, Owner’s manual, Factory tools and jack, Matching numbers. VIN: 180030.10.9509795 The first W180 chassis 220S Cabriolet was introduced at the Frankfurt Auto Show in September of 1955 and the first production cabriolet rolled off the assembly line in July of 1956. Mercedes Benz realized that there was a market for a less expensive, more personal automobile. This was achieved by... shortening the chassis of the very successful 220 Sedan by 4.7 inches and adding plenty of chrome, wood and leather. Still hand-built, these elegant automobiles were stylish and highly drivable. Produced until November 1960 there were only 1,112 cabriolets built over the four years of production, making it a rare post-war model. This example was built on July 9th, 1959 and per original build sheet and had several desirable options, such as; Reclining seats, Windshield Washers, Becker Europa Radio, Dual Blower fans, Outsider mirror and an extra kilo of paint! In the 1970’s and 1980’s, this 220 S was in the ownership of the Nugent family of Holland, Michigan. A member of the Mercedes-Benz Club of America, Mr. Nugent enjoyed the car for more than a decade before undertaking a restoration to return the car to its original splendor, a photo-documented rotisserie restoration was performed in 1987. The 220 S was sold in 2012 by Autosport Designs to a Mercedes collector in Georgia where it has been driven sparingly although always receiving regular servicing, maintenance and detailing as needed. Today, the car presents very well and possesses the lovely, inviting feel of a well-cared-for restoration. This 220 S Cabriolet is offered with an impressive file that includes restoration photos, copies of factory build records, a pair of 1959 Michigan license plates, as well as a Mercedes-Benz workshop manual, parts catalogue, instruction manual, service booklet, list of authorized dealers and sales brochure. Factory tools and jack also accompany the sale. A highly enjoyable classic that is ready for immediate enjoyment.
