This is the iconic Mercedes Benz 220S ponton sedan, and is very rare because it is one of few made with a sun roof. It is in excellent mechanical condition. The body and frame are remarkably clean, especially for a 60-year old vehicle. The car is powered by an inline-6 cylinder engine with dual carburetors and has plenty of pep. It shifts up and down the gears smoothly, and stops on a dime. All lights and gauges work, including the clock. The radio does not function, but can be easily replaced with an aftermarket rear camera/GPS model while still maintaining the cockpit's elegant styling. The car originally featured air conditioning and the blower works fine. The pump and condenser are currently stored in the trunk, as shown in the relevant photo, because the bracket to hold the pump is missing.
The exterior chrome seems to be original and is in good shape. The body itself has some minor dings and scratches, as you might expect in a vehicle of this vintage. It does need paint, although it still attracts admiring glances. The tires, which I estimate at more than 30 years of age, should be replaced even though they have very good tread. As you can see from the photos, the underside is very clean.
The interior has been completely renovated. The solid birch dash and window trim have been professionally restored without sacrificing the glowing vintage patina. The carpet has been replaced, along with the door panels and headliner, and the seats have been recovered. The classic Webasto sun roof slides open and closed easily. It is in good condition, although there is a small flaw on the exterior near the front on the driver's side. Please see photo with quarter for size comparison.
These cars are fun to own and a pleasure to drive, and always garner lots of compliments.
