1976 Mercedes-Benz 450 SL (R107) Pastel Blue with Dark Blue Int/Hardtop
1976 Mercedes-Benz SL-Class R107 Description
1976 Mercedes-Benz 450 SL(R107) Roadster w/ Hardtop
Hello, and thanks for checking out my latest auction. This auction is for a RUST FREE WEST COAST 1976 Mercedes-Benz 450SL. It is finished in its factory color of Pastel Blue. The Hardtop is Medium Blue and the Soft Top and Interior is Navy Blue. This SL is as close to an original survivor as I suppose there is. This car has spent most days and nights of its life parked in a garagewaiting... For what? I don't know. Maybe you! It's so original, the only aftermarket item I can find is the period correct Pioneer Cassette deck. Which still sounds great, I might add. The power antenna works too. I have washed the Benz, but I stopped short of a full detail to preserve its originality for the new owner. But, before i get all over the place let me start with the exterior.
The color and finish is correct and in the exact factory color Pastel Blue. I think it's probably a respray but its hard to be totally sure. There are zero signs of bodywork or collision repair. The paint is lacquerand would polish well with a good detailer behind a buffer. There are a few "grandpa" stone chip touch-upson the hood in the wrong color. A few tiny dings exist but nothing ugly. The hardtop is perfect but, has never seen a buff or wax and has been stashed in a garage for 40 years. The headliner in the hardtop is also perfect.
All the gaps are all uniform and all the window and the trunk seals and top seals are supple and tight. The doors don't sag and open/close without effort. As do the hood and trunk. The lenses are all original and beautiful including the factory driving lights. The original hubcaps match perfectly and are all in excellent condition. The hardtop was rarely on the car as the Mercedes was only used on nice days for open air rides. The Softtop is new German Canvas and as tight as a drum. All the top mechanism works easily and as it should. The top is so tight it takes some effort to snap the rear catch. The bumpers are laser straight, all the glass is perfect and all the chrome is also like new. The grill and badging as all tight and correct.
The Interior is great but there are a few runs in the loop carpet in the driver's mat. There is also a triangle of loop missing in the passenger foot-well. The Seats are Mercedes-Tex and wow, this stuff wears like iron. They look new still. Not only are seat surfaces nice, all the structure and padding and chrome is excellent too. The seat belts are pristine and retract easily. The door panelsare also original and excellent. The dash also has a few cracks worth mentioning. The floorboards and the trunk bottom are rust free, clean and solid. The power windows work as they should as do the door locks and climate control. The air conditioning pump is not hooked to the belts, but spins freely. Plan on giving that attention if you wish to have working A/C. As I mentioned the stereo is a Pioneer aftermarket from the late 70's i'd guess. It sounds great and the power antenna works with the factory switch. The sun-visors are sort of floppy they need the new inside connector pieces. I removed the passenger visor because it was hanging low. It is included with the sale.
The Mercedes runs perfectly. No smoking or leaking or sputtered attempts at hard acceleration. It starts easily even after months long sits and leave no drips on the garage floor. The spark plugs and wires are new as are the fluids and filters. Although un-detailed, the engine is perfectly sorted and shows no signs of rodents or weird repairs. The transmission shifts smoothly through all gears and downshifts under acceleration effortlessly. The power steering, suspension, and brakes work together in perfect harmony to soak up the curves and stop the car with ease at a heartbeat's notice. There is no play/pull in the wheel or wander on the road. The Mercedes stops dead straight even on hard breaking The Michelin tires are 85%+ and show no signs of age. The spare is original so it may need a rubber upgrade.
